My daughter works in a call centre. She was going through the customer call list for that day, had to phone a customer called Barbara* (NC).
A man answered so DD said the company spiel and said, "Can I speak to Barbara please?" The man immediately shouted at her with "I think you need to have some company training on how to speak to people! I'm Barbara!"

Has it got to the point where we are now supposed to assume, or somehow telepathically know, that a male voice on the end of a phone is a man that identifies as a woman? 😡

Thanks for all your replies. My daughter was just completely taken aback. As some PP s have said, a simple "Yes, it's me!" in response would have sufficed. Management just rolled their eyes when my daughter told them (a supportive, unwoke eye roll).

Following on from the comment above, perhaps you might show her this (once you've had a look at it first):

Customer “I’m returning a call I just had now.”

Customer: “No, no, it was definitely a bloke..

Oh god, I have genuinely done this, only it was ‘Dave*‘. I was fucking mortified, because I was phoning in advance of meeting Dave in a professional situation.

Fortunately Dave was fucking lovely about it, laughed the situation off with dignity and we got on with the meeting while I cringed internally for ever. Interesting, the difference in response between Barbara and Dave isn’t it? Almost as if one of them had been socialied to be polite and mindful of others.

In fact I now meet Dave regularly and Dave is always unfailingly nice and polite despite my initial faux pas. Odd that.
