Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Let's just change everything to accommodate a few 'special' people

This has annoyed me this morning. It's important that there are categories based on sex to ensure equality. Why are people so quick to do away with them to avoid offending the few?

Brit Awards 'will review' male and female categories

If literature prizes are anything to go by, in any mixed category funnily enough there are far more talented males than females. Separate awards were set up to even out the bias in our society. It’s naive to think this has gone away.

stillathing · 23/09/2019 12:10

No, no, don't be so silly! Separate awards, like toilets, were historically to accommodate eyeliner and dresses!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 23/09/2019 12:34

I saw the brit awards thing this morning and agree with alwaystawny

It’s ridiculous, make a third bloody award if you absolutely have to...but quite obviously the womans award will disappear if everyone is able to ‘identify’ into it

It’ll be men and non men all over again

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 23/09/2019 12:34

Though obviously stillathing has an excellent point Grin

Hellmistress · 23/09/2019 13:11

This is part of a long-term plan to completely eradicate the entire concept of sex and sex-differences. And every single organisation is at risk of capitulating to this madness if they haven't already. They're already coming for our children. I used to think this idea was alarmist, paranoid and misguided but now I see I was wrong.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 23/09/2019 13:14

And we all know the prizes will go to those brave souls who ‘identify’ as women, none binary and all that nonsense. You might as well give up now women, because soon there will be no awards, spaces, etc for us. Woke wankers.

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:18

Might be better than a Caitlyn Jenner woman of the year scenario though Smile

BeyondAvoidant · 23/09/2019 13:20

I hope a new Oscar category is being created for those actors/resses who aren't little gold men

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:25

Or the Myanmar / Burmese president and Barack Obama winning the Nobel peace prize. Trump was nominated for it recently as well

PickleC · 23/09/2019 13:28

This is madness on the part of the Brits. Separate female categories were created for good bloody reasons - to address the opportunity gap between men and women.

Looking at acting, how many times even now are the meaty and 'Oscar worthy' roles skewed towards male actors because those are the parts that are being written. Or the historical figures deemed worthy of their own film are male because again those were the people able to participate fully in society (and those playing their wives can emote from the sidelines with the few lines awarded to them). It has nothing to do with either sex being more talented, far far from it, just that if the two sexes compete together women tend to lose out on awards.

In music it is slightly different but still male artists are given more opportunities and treated as being worthier of serious consideration.

To lump everyone into one category can only be to the detriment of women but I guess that isn't of great concern to the powers that be.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2019 13:32

Might be better than a Caitlyn Jenner woman of the year scenario though

I'm inclined to agree with that.

Tyrotoxicity · 23/09/2019 13:34

Novel idea for the Brit Awards people to consider: review the male categories if you must. Subdivide 'em however the hell you like. Back the hell away from the female category. That one's the protected one.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2019 13:36
  • Separate female categories were created for good bloody reasons - to address the opportunity gap between men and women.

Maybe - just maybe - we're at a point where if having just 'best performer' showed up the sex bias then the industry might be under more pressure to really fix the opportunity gap - more and better roles for women - rather than just doling out women's prizes?

Perhaps more genre-specific awards could help?

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:37

I slightly disagree with some of what is being said. I’m against the scrapping of categories because it’s clearly just being driven by the non binary nut jobs. But there’s nothing necessarily wrong with having a best Music Artist or Actor award. This isn’t sport where there are very clear and just basic rational reasons.

Women and men can compete with each other for best song or album and I don’t agree with every award or top job having to have one of each. Every school could have both a female and male headteacher for instance rather than one.

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:40

Although joint heads don’t work really as I believe in there being a man or woman or whatever individual at the top with responsibility rather than giving someone the opportunity to try and palm it off to someone else

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:44

I’m on a roll now sorry and think some of these awards could almost be anti feminist and patronising. Prizes for everyone. Ok you weren’t the best this year but you can have the best woman / man one.

I’m slightly in favour of it as a concept but against it because of the motives of those pushing it on to the agenda

Caucho · 23/09/2019 13:51

It’s not a ensuring equality have one of each sex. It’s segregating. We could have a best black / white / asian one going down that route alongside a best christian / muslim / jewish one.

There are good reasons for sex segregation. Toilets, hospital wards, refuges, prisons etc but not sure if some poncy luvvy awards should come under that. What’s wrong with having a novel of the year? If there was a mans and woman’s one then which is deemed the best? Is there a reason why a woman writer is considered inferior to male one so needs a separate one?

Doyoumind · 23/09/2019 13:54

I don't actually believe the TRAs would be for the abolition of the categories anyway and they have more sway than the NBs.

I reckon Denzil Washington or Halle Berry would be a bit pissed off if they won the Best Black Male or Best Black Female Oscar rather than the ones they actually got.

But agree the Trans people wouldn’t go for it as that would be failing to recognise they are a ‘real’ woman / man. But the non binary identifying ones would. Arghh what’s going on? Would be great if they could argue with each other about it and leave everyone else out of it
