"Due to all the funding trans children's charity Mermaids has received, it has appointed Jake Edwards to a communications role. Here's Jake this summer talking about kink for 10 minutes, starting with the different sized objects he's inserted into his anus"

I saw this too MrsSnippyPants and started a thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3687760-New-Communications-Assistant-at-Mermaids It's certainly a different Q&A to the one they're doing on the Mermaids Twitter isn't it?!

BarbaraStrozzi · 09/09/2019 18:37

At least there's no suggestion (yet) that this person is bringing their kinks into the workplace toilets. Unlike rubber man at the NSPCC. Though I am left reflecting on what the world has come to when I'm grateful for small mercies like that.

MrsSnippyPants · 09/09/2019 18:46

Aaaargh Sheyher, I did look before I posted, sorry! Confused

Ah well.

Why can these organisations not find ‘normal’ trans people. They do exist but are probably not the shrieking political sorts who want to have a quiet life. And then people complain that people are transphobic for assuming they’re all perverts. Well stop giving jobs to perverts

Fraggling · 09/09/2019 21:16

I don't understand how the nspcc rubber man kept his job.

So you have a meeting with Male work colleague and you know he likes to masturbate and piss into rubber underwear at work and keep it on.

I mean how is this fair to his colleagues in any way shape or form?

And wow to mermaids new hire.

EverylittleAlps · 09/09/2019 21:31

Good afternoon everyone, if anyone needs to pop out for a quick wee before we start, please do - otherwise there is a break in the agenda in an hour. No?

Ok well then, item 1. Chafing.

OhHolyJesus · 09/09/2019 21:54

Rubberman was 'on leave' last I heard, has he been formally excused?

Must look up if there's news from the charity commission investigation.

BarbariansMum · 09/09/2019 22:39

@Caucho the "normal" transpeople I know keep their heads down to survive. They wouldn't court publicity because they get enough abuse from the general public as it is.

PencilsInSpace · 09/09/2019 22:54

At least there's no suggestion (yet) that this person is bringing their kinks into the workplace toilets. Unlike rubber man at the NSPCC.

The problem with NSPCC rubber wanky man was not only that he did that in the work toilets but also that his videos were linked to from his linkedin account and so easily findable by any child who decided to look him up.

I didn't watch the whole of this person's video on the other thread because it was grim as fuck and very explicit. I don't know if that's typical of this person's youtube channel or if it would be easy to just remove this one problematic video.

But as things stand, Mermaids are plugging this person as their new comms employee and the children who this charity is supposed to support will have completely no problem finding that video.

Mermaids have no concept of boundaries and so are a dangerous organisation because they cannot safeguard children.

NotBadConsidering · 09/09/2019 23:01

After spending years telling children to not post anything online you might regret in the future, we can now tell them it doesn’t matter, because there’s always the option of applying for jobs at children’s charities.

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2019 23:07

If it wasn't true I'd laugh

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2019 23:15

A communications role with a charity for children and that's what he chooses to communicate?Confused

nettie434 · 10/09/2019 07:14

It's a bit odd really. I would have thought that it was more politically adept to employ someone who was very 'vanilla' in that role.

ChattyLion · 10/09/2019 07:31

What Pencils said.

ChattyLion · 10/09/2019 07:37

Thank you NotBad for the laugh! I needed that this morning. But bloody hell, it’s true isn’t it?

WTF is going on with the charity sector.? They have the Oxfam scandal and a Charity Commission investigation so you would think safeguarding is going to be top of the agenda for everyone.

Nope, apparently campaigning for male sexual entitlement is the absolute priority.

This appointment is pretty much them thumbing their noses at safeguarding.

Mermaids thinks parental alienation is child safeguarding. That pretty much tells you all you need to know.

VictoriaSpongeAndTea · 10/09/2019 10:20

In the inevitable inquiry this will be one of those decisions where they'll say how on earth could anyone think they were behaving with children's safeguarding and well being in mind

littlbrowndog · 10/09/2019 10:34

Why woul£ you even share that sort of stuff ffs

Do people not even have a clue about what should be shared and what should be kept private.

Attention seeking 🤷‍♀️

OldCrone · 10/09/2019 10:42

The video has been made private now.

I wonder if that was because Jake's employers said it was inappropriate or because of discussion on here and twitter.

littlbrowndog · 10/09/2019 10:45

Private !! Ffs it should have been always private

What the fuck is wrong with these attention seekers

Who even makes that sort off stuff 👿

NotBadConsidering · 10/09/2019 11:25

If it’s only just been made private, it begs the question: did Mermaids not know about it beforehand? If not, then it clearly demonstrates they did no form of due diligence before employing this person, highlighting their complete ineptitude in this regard. If they DID know about the video, why does this person feel the need to make it private, given his new employer doesn’t seem to care?

OldCrone · 10/09/2019 11:41

Jake Edwards has a youtube channel with dozens of videos posted over the last 6 years. Mermaids can't have been unaware, and should have viewed the content of recent ones. The oldest ones are of a very young looking Jake singing and playing guitar.

Jake has also featured on childline videos. Here's one from 2016.

DuMondeB · 10/09/2019 13:49

This.

Shethey · 10/09/2019 14:54

Jake admits that they love combining ‘hard femme and hard masc coded things’ and causing people to do a ‘double take’ when they see their beard paired with red lipstick or skirt with hairy legs. Basically what that says to me is that they don’t want to be a man being told they can’t wear lipstick or a woman being told they have to shave their legs??! So basically they arrive at ‘non binary’ because it’s a way to do both - how restrictive is gender eh?!

And if you explore this world you realise that it’s so ‘vanilla’ to not declare yourself into some kink. So there’s kids, say 14, years old declaring themselves pansexual, polyamorous etc... and then there’s the kids who, strangely enough, declare themselves asexual because perhaps they’re not quite ready for being a sub or a dom or a furry or a unicorn yet. Basically the world of kink is laid out before them as soon as they start surfing YouTube with doubts about their sexuality and gender. It’s like you’re instantly a bigot if you don’t profess to be ‘queer’ and aren’t open to getting it on with any sex/gender/species etc... This is the world now. See also Ash Hardell.

Jake will probably say they steer people away who aren’t old enough to be learning these things. But you only have to look at the profile of many of their Twitter followers to see there’s a lot of under 16s. And so many wanting ‘top surgery’. And so many of them depressed and battling mental illness. It’s sad and terrifying.

As I said before I hope Mermaids give Jake a lot of support because they are pushing them right out front. I’ve never seen Jake engage on the more political aspect of identity politics - it’s always just been about themselves and their friends and their fans. I sense they’re quite naive on that front although they did admit to feeling uncomfortable about the mixing up of kids and kink on Pride Marches and how they felt it was inappropriate.
