I was trying to find a bandana type thing in the suffrage colours, and after a few different google searches (suffragette silk scarf, suffragette bandana, green white and purple scarf) I just typed green white and purple flag, and WTF
Now, All you see plastered all over google is references to the ‘non binary’ flag, lgbt etc.
I’m just a bit shocked really, how did it come to this, that they’ve so successfully erased and appropriated this flag? How was it allowed to happen? They know exactly what they’re doing, and it’s infuriating

Green, white and purple is the genderqueer flag. It was created in 2011. Its not very commonly used within the LGBT community. Normally it's either the transgender flag or the non binary flag.

I have a suffragette poster in my house using the colours. I don't see why two separate things can't use the same colours.

Green, white, violet = give women votes.

Funnily enough the law at the time defined the women from whom they were withholding votes in terms of their biology. Not their internal gender feels. All the blokes back then who maybe felt a bit feminine or however it was framed? Still able to vote if they a penis and the right income.

The person who came up with those colours claimed not to have known their previous significance. Maybe in part a U.K./US thing as well as youth?

The 'genderqueer' flag seems to be an insipid lavender, white and sickly chartreuse rather than the bold green, white and violet of the suffragettes.

There was quite a bit of green, white and violet around last year in items celebrating the centenary of the initial votes for women - real life rather than Internet 'flag for everything' phenomenon.

Lots of things share colours.

I have fibromyalgia, it's colour is purple. So is epilepsy's colour.

Many country flags use the same colours in different orders or shapes.

It is what it is.

Re the colour scheme, It seems very coincidental that a genderqueer flag created in 2011, that’s hardly ever used apparently, comes up first in a google search, before that of the suffragettes.

So I thought maybe I’d try green white and violet flag instead, to really hammer home what I was looking for. Nope, still gender queer is the top result.
It’s clearly being done on purpose.
At least I found what I was looking for I suppose.

'Suffragette flag' gets the right thing for me at least!

'womens rights flag' gets me the gold/white/purple which is the colours of the US national women's party, I guess the equivalent there. Green/white/purple may genuinely not be that well known the other side of the pond.

And suffragists flag is red, white and green - this was raised over parliament last year on Millicent Fawcett's birthday

Hmm - on this one, my own feeling is that it was ignorance rather than appropriation. As ^^ the U.S. colours were different.

There were a number of UK suffrage groups, of course, sporting a wide range of colours - I've recently been reading about them in Hearts and Minds

And - apologies - party prospering about Give Women Votes. This is an urban myth. The WSPU colours were green, white and PURPLE, and the universal slogan was 'Votes for Women'. (And I think it was appalling that the Procession event last year fell for it!)

I think purple is sometimes meant to signify androgyny. As a non-conforming feminist I always had a soft spot for androgyny, who cares what you wear just get on with it.
