"You don't get to be offended by science" t-shirt

I saw someone wearing this t-shirt and decided I need one. It's designed by a youtuber called Mama Doctor Jones who is an Ob Gyn with a youtube channel about pregnancy, birth and parenting. I think the quote from the t-shirt is in reference to vaccinations but I feel like it's appropriate in a wide range of situations. I'm just sharing this here for anyone else who might want one.

I just came on to recommend Mama Doctor Jones on YouTube and the T shirt too Grin

Her channel would be perfect for anyone seeking to immunise teenagers against the conflation of sex and gender. There is lots of detail about pregnancy, childbirth and female contraception. Also reaction videos to birth and pregnancy as portrayed in various TV dramas. Her videos are always science based.

She’s a lot of fun to watch, I enjoyed especially her coverage of Call the midwife

TemporaryPermanent · 04/11/2019 20:01

Not keen but I guess I dont have to buy it.

Plenty of shit science out there, because science is a flawed human activity. I dont want any debate shut down with 'and thats science!' rhetoric. The bell curve? MRAs 'proving' that women are super violent? That delightful study on whether women with endometriosis are hotter than other women? I'm offended by all that crap.

Oh, no idea what happened with that link! Sorry.

Goosefoot · 04/11/2019 21:19

I can't get excited.

The person I know who would be most likely to wear this, post multiple times about it, and shout pro-science stuff, about how only idiots don't vaccinate and it should be illegal, is also the person who shouts most loudly about gender ideology, and everything else, with the most illogical arguments possible, and who gets most offended when you try and have a rational discussion or point out something like arguing in a circle.

Matereality · 04/11/2019 22:37

I had not thought of the T shirt in those terms before, but suppose you are right.

Anyway, her channel is unapologetically female focussed and pro woman. Which might be refreshing even if you dislike the T Smile

The problem is that currently on Twitter etc the TRAs regularly state that science supports their arguments regarding sex and trans women in sport. It could be used by either side.

Doyoumind · 04/11/2019 22:42

Just realised this was from August.

PucaIontach · 04/11/2019 22:45

I agree with @TemporaryPermanent, she has said what i was about to say.

I like that one! I’m still kicking myself for not getting one I saw a few years back at a uni shop (a college that has brilliant science and medical Schools).

It had the chemically sciencey definition of ‘woman’.

aliasundercover · 05/11/2019 00:38

Doyoumind
As soon as they say TWAW they have lost all claim to scientific validity. That's why this shirt works - you can argue about some details, but there are other things that are indisputably true: TWANW. Fact.

Matereality · 05/11/2019 06:06

Doyoumind It was from August, but I resurrected the thread rather than start a new one to recommend Mama Doctor Jones

testing987654321 · 05/11/2019 06:38

It can't really be used by either side. Just because people say "science says trans women have no physical advantage" doesn't make it true. And if the scientific community bothered doing proper rigorous analytics this would be quickly shown.

Doyoumind · 05/11/2019 09:13

I agree that science doesn't support them but did a very quick search on Twitter and here are three examples I found within 10 seconds.

Science is a method, not a series of unchanging facts or a selection of statistics. You put your hypothesis out there and you test it, and invite debate or further tests.

Some belief systems include the belief that the belief or belief system can't be tested or doesn't follow logical patterns so whatever is dictated is true. These are unscientific but would include most religions and superstitions.

dipstyque · 05/11/2019 09:24

So one can't really say "science says...".
Empirical evidence, perhaps, says...
