A mother posted asking for advice on the legaladviceUK reddit after receiving this letter.

This is her explanation. It involves Mermaids training the school.

She didn't get good advice because that subreddit is moderated by TRAs. The TRA mods tried to find evidence the letter was fake and they wound up deciding that it had not been photoshopped. Then, after calling Mermaids for advice on the situation, they locked and deleted the thread to stop the story spreading.

I hope I'm doing the right thing by posting this. I'd hate for the mother and child in this case to get hunted down by the media. But I hope they can access some help.

Just to note that I do not know who they are, I just saw the posts. And although the letter doesn't seem to have been photoshopped, there is nothing stopping anyone from printing out a fake letter and scanning it. But it looks legitimate.

It is signed 'school administrator', indicating that a school has sent it, yet has been sent from an 'education authority' in Manchester according to the address on the right. If it were from admissions, which is the LA department that would deal with registration matters, it would be signed by an 'admissions officer'.

I think you're right, Soontobe60. This would be a school matter, not an LEA matter, so it would make no sense for the letter to come from the LEA, which has very little jurisdiction over schools these days. And a school would call the parent in to discuss the issue, not send them a letter with a bald statement like that.

Whether or not this letter is fake, I am pleased it has been brought to the attention of MN and Twitter. It seems to me that Canada, New Zealand and others have sleep-walked into a nightmare situation with self-ID and the more that can be done to stop this happening in the UK the better.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 31/07/2019 08:49

I wouldn't disagree with what's being said about the authenticity of the letter. But it is relevant that the advice from many trans organisations (and a poster on here) is that this can and should happen in relation to children which is very concerning.

Your entire post was about a different situation Bespin. Grin

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 31/07/2019 09:50

"I need help on x situation "

"Well you're not allowed any on here ,so go back to the people that might've caused the problem in the first place. No one else should try and help either, but if they do ignore them.
It's for your own good"

It was not me who posted it to Twitter, no.

I interpreted the top left squiggle as indicative of headed paper. But the point about School Administrator not being an LEA post is convincing.

(However, the point about "obviously the other parent consented" is rather silly given that the letter is addressed to Mr and Mrs Surname.)

I'm not convinced it is genuine either. The 'forthwith' is a strange word to use in a letter to parents as it's not plain English. Also, it says 'see reverse for further information' but that page hasn't been included in the Reddit post.

Oops, sorry, it's Manchester Healthy Schools who use the trans inclusion toolkit:

brain go away please

Soontobe60 · 01/08/2019 07:44

@DreamingBe
Thanks for the link. It won't allow me to download the toolkit, which is a shame as I'd like to see what it says. Maybe someone else has a link that will allow me to do this?

DreamingBe · 01/08/2019 08:41

@Soontobe60, it's the Allsorts one that they reference. The latest version is on here: www.allsortsyouth.org.uk/resources/toolkits-booklets-guides

popehilarious · 15/09/2019 14:28

What happened with this? Did it turn out to be a fake letter?

SirVixofVixHall · 15/09/2019 14:37

Horrendous. I would pull my child out of that school immediately.

I'm not sure that it was ever established if it was true. BUT, it is a fact that there are a number of parents who have discovered to their horror that schools have followed the parental alienation advice from trans groups and enabled their child to transition without initial parental knowledge. I know of two families and in each case it has been a totally devastating experience.
Quite rightly their focus has been on maintaining their relationship with their child rather than raising public complaints with the schools, which is why I suspect this remains so hidden. Awful.
