Go on, you first - what's the "OA"?

IamtheOA · 20/07/2019 20:09

It's from the show on Netflix.... I'm not finished watching it, so I'm not sure what OA means yet! 🤣

OP posts:
TurboTeddy · 20/07/2019 20:11

OA means original angel. Google is your friend. Smile

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/07/2019 20:14

The OA - definition- one that saves the world with interpretive dance. Has many plot holes. Is enjoyed by unthinking people.

Twaw - Trans women are women

TERF - Trans exclusionary radical.femininst

OhHolyJesus · 20/07/2019 20:18

Others are

AWA Anti Women activists
MRS Men's right activist
TRA trans rights activists

You get the gist

TiM trans identifies Male
FtM Male to female

RadFem is radical feminist
LibFem is liberal feminist (usually centre men in their feminism and generally they believe men can be women and people can change their sex)

There really should be an acronyms list somewhere. You'll soon pick it up.

IamtheOA · 20/07/2019 20:19

I think.
I also enjoy the OA- it's only a TV show....

What’s an A.O.? Someone said David Beckham was an A.O.

Dragonasaurus · 17/10/2025 15:23

Terf - I prefer Tired of Explaining Reality to Fuckwits (thankyou to the creative, exasperated person who coined that 😆)

Dragonasaurus · 17/10/2025 15:24

And FtM is surely female to male not the other way around?

GallantKumquat · 17/10/2025 16:11

Malaga Airport = AGP (the airport code) = autogynephilia = men who are aroused by thinking of themselves as women.

That one's like cockney rhyming slang. 😵‍💫

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 17/10/2025 16:37

TERF = trans exclusionary radical feminist, or alternatively tired of explaining reality to fuckwits. People who believe men can't be women no matter how they believe they identify or what they do to themselves.

TWAW = trans women are women.

TMAM = trans men are men.

TWAM = trans women are men.

TWATW = trans women are trans women, which is a politer way of saying trans women are men.

TMAW = trans men are women.

TIM = trans identifying male, or trans identifying man, which is a synonym for trans woman used by people who don't want to pretend that they are any kind of women.

TIF = trans identifying female, which is a synonym for trans man used by people who don't want to pretend that they are any kind of men.

AGP = autogynephilia, Google it, sometimes euphemistically referred to on here as "Malaga Airport", due to Malaga Airport having the code AGP.

May I give you WORIADS? As a late arrival, that one took me a while. 'Worthy of respect in a democratic society'. Applies to the belief that sex is biological and cannot be changed.

Seriestwo · 17/10/2025 17:39

FFS - “oh look, another woman having to crowdfund to take some institution to court so she can access her legal rights to privacy, safety and dignity.”

HTH - “happy to help”, when you chuck said woman a fiver. You’d like to give more but there are about a thousand crowdfunders a month and you can’t claim terf tax back.

MarieDeGournay · 17/10/2025 20:43

Here's an acronym which I discovered here on FWR, it's not strictly gender-ish, but it's relevant:
DARVO = Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.

It's a technique used in abusive relationships, and it's very obviously also used by TRAs [trans rights activists] - e.g. denial that there is any conflict between women's rights and trans rights, attacking GC women both verbally and physically, and making out that they are the marginalised victims.

For example, by claiming that women are denying transwomen their 'dignity and privacy' by stopping them using the women's toilets.

Once you know what DARVO is, it's easy to spot it in a lot of trans activism, and is useful because you can name what it is that's wrong with an action or statement.

Igmum · 18/10/2025 13:24

WFTCHTJ in the online tribunals. I thought it was something to do with the judge but now think it’s something like Waiting for the Court Host to join (or something like that, puzzled me for ages).

DARVO is used a lot by MRA/TRA

LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ¥~* : honestly at this point this is anyone’s guess, it used to just refer to lesbians, gay men, and bi folk, but it’s been completely hijacked by the TRAs and every other facet of identification.

As somebody pointed out, the LGB2STQ+ acronyms look like WiFi passwordsGrin
The '2S' means 'Two Spirit', a term which covers cultures e.g. Polynesian which have a '3rd Gender', usually men who reject masculine stereotypes and are accepted as living their lives as not-men and not-women- so not the same as trans, they don't claim to be women, they just don't want to be stereotypical men. Hence 3rd gender, they are living outside the male/female binary, rather than denying it.

The letter 'I' is sometimes - less so recently - included in 'LGBTQI'.
It stands for 'intersex'. It's not acceptable because 'intersex' isn't a valid term, there are people with DSDs, differences in sexual development, but they are not 'intersex', they are not in-between or both, they are almost always either male with a DSD or female with a DSD. It's a condition, not an identity, so it doesn't belong with LGBTQ etc.

LGB✂T is used to indicate that transgenderism is not the same as sexuality, and T for trans should not be attached to LGB because trans is a different issue.

WORIADS, worthy of respect in a democratic society, is a great one busybusybusy2015Smile
Just adding that a 2022 employment tribunal ruled that Maya Forstaters' gender-critical beliefs were 'worthy of respect in a democratic society' and that she had been discriminated against because of them.
So WORIADS relates to a landmark decision and a key moment, and arguably the tide turning...

Surely by this argument we also need a '4th Gender', for the women who reject feminine stereotypes and are living their lives as not-women, but not-men. There are plenty of women already living like this, why is it always the men who need to make it a ‘special’ thing?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/10/2025 00:52

WFTCHTJ is 'waiting for the conference host to join'.

FWS - For Women Scotland (the organisation, but also often used for the FWS v Scottish Government case that led to the 16 April Supreme Court decision.

EA - Equality Act 2010.

LadyAddle · 19/10/2025 23:28

FWR crops up a lot - is it For Women's Rights?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/10/2025 23:31

FWR - old name of this board. Feminism and women's rights, I think.

Edited

Yes that's right - it's now called Feminism: Sex and gender discussions and the acronym should be FSGD or FS&GD but nobody uses that, because FWR is the familiar old title.
Confusing to newcomers😕

We could write a whole essay on GC itself: 'gender critical' meaning critical of gender ideology, critical of gender stereotypes, critical of the term 'gender' replacing 'sex'.
I think it is used for convenience sake, although there is no 100% agreed definition.
Quite a few of us happily use TERF for similar reasons, although others completely reject it because it is a slur.
There's a long tradition of groups using within the group words which are slurs when used by outsiders - that might explain why TERF is sometimes OK and sometimes not.

ZT. Zombie thread.
Since the OP posted this in 2019 I assume she's got the hang of it by now 😂

LadyAddle · 20/10/2025 17:59

Oh dear, hadn't noticed it was a zombie thread - thanks nevertheless @NoBinturongsHereMate and @MarieDeGournay, the recaps were very informative.
