Jenny Marra MSP on mixed sex wards

Jenny Marra is a Labour MSP for north-east Scotland who is based in Dundee. She tabled the parliamentary motion that drew cross-party support for more respectful discussions of trans issues.

She has now expressed concerns over mixed sex hospital wards in a recent press article about a Dundee hospital's dementia provision. The responses to her Twitter thread are generally supportive, and one is deeply disturbing

"Ok so evidence off the ward from me. Taken to a privately run mobile CT scan unit at Perth Royal Infirmary manned by 3 men. Told to remove clothes/no female present. I have complained, I've had full apologies from #NHS and #inhealth but yes female #dignity is being eroded daily."

Completely unacceptable - but it shows the impact of so many influential predatory males.

Anyone see this last week in Ireland?

17 year old girl accommodated on an all-male ward after she was injured in a car accident.

She was allegedly sexually assaulted overnight by a male patient who was sharing the ward.

Completely unacceptable - both the OP, and the poor girl put on an all male ward.

This is why women must have a right to female only wards, and a female health professional.

How horrible and frightening to wake up in a hospital ward after a car accident with a man doing that to you. Poor girl.

Wards in most Australian hospitals have been mixed sex for decades.

I've asked, and no one seems to know when it began exactly, just that by the mid 90s maternity wards were likely the only single sex wards in public hospitals.

Private hospitals tend to be no more than 4 in a room but often while they 'attempt' single sex they don't have a policy that says so.

It's dangerous for women. Who are routinely sexually assaulted while in hospital. No one cares/it's too expensive to fix.

Good to see another MSP speaking out. What about the other Labour women MSPs who are rumoured to be gender critical? Elaine Smith? Johann Lamont? Time we heard from you.
