I'm actually lost for words on this.

The Guardian bleat on about plastic waste but this is acceptable? It's for collectors only. Children would never understand it. For feck's sake grow up!

Plus Ziggy didn't have breasts. And had more in the pelvic area than Ken. But still.

Plastic!

I think Bowie had breasts in American Gods

The Guardian is not what I would call consistent on the topic of environmentalism. It loves to tell everyone to be a vegan, despite good evidence that's probably not the least impactful diet, but they love to write about fashion, overseas holidays, and multi-millions dollar blockbuster films that use a huge amount of resources to produce. Not to mention their support of pretty banal popular economic theory predicated on consumption.

Most of us are inconsistent in the end, even with a lot of effort it's almost impossible not to be defined by what is possible in the culture we live in, but they don't really seem to connect the dots much for a publication.

LassOfFyvie · 11/07/2019 18:29

It's hardly worth getting so worked up about in the whole scheme of plastic tat. I mean it's not like the orgy of plastic tat buying which is Christmas. Presumably if it is a collectable it has less chance of ending in landfill than the average plastic tat?

Is it because it is Bowie that you are outraged? I don't have much time for Bowie and his questionable activities.

JellyfishAndShells · 11/07/2019 18:35

It’s just Barbie wearing a fancy dress costume, though, isn’t it? Can’t get too outraged about that and people spending large amounts of money on collectibles isn’t unusual- dotty though I personally find it.

I saw Bowie live in the brief phase of long hair and a long dress - can confirm, no bosoms. But marvellous.

placemats · 11/07/2019 18:37

It's the plastic. And yes. I do get worked up about it. Plus the cliche's and the wrongness!

We can't go NO plastic on Christmas Day in our house. (We don't open many presents now we are all adults but we do enjoy ourselves). We try to avoid waste though. And all previous wrapping paper is put into a bag and you take it out blindly.

Shaking the presents is best.

And WHY AM I DISCUSSING XMAS IN JULY?

Off to warmer, dryer climes soon.

Are you on glue OP?

DuMondeB · 11/07/2019 19:10

These expensive ‘collector’ Barbies will at least stay out of landfill a bit longer than the budget ones!

The Bob Mackie Barbies are probably the worst ones ever:

WTF has this got to do with feminist chat?

RiddleyW · 11/07/2019 20:16

Are you trying to make this some kind of weird trans issue op? It’s just Barbie dressed up.

AlwaysComingHome · 11/07/2019 20:27

It’s not using any more plastic than any other Barbie - unless it has a penis.

The Klaus Barbie was worse.

AlwaysComingHome · 11/07/2019 20:38

Bowie might have actually liked that one in his Thin White Duke phase.

have you posted on the wrong forum section? should this not be under the eco one.

Lumene · 11/07/2019 23:07

Looks cool but agree about the plastic.

Not sure why this is posted in feminism?

Gingerkittykat · 12/07/2019 02:36

I was wondering if anyone had started a thread about this.

Unfortunately I have read some woke comments on FB which have transed David Bowie, saying he would have loved it because he didn't identify as any gender (I'm assuming that's not true) and making him some kind of trans hero.

VoleClock · 12/07/2019 09:31

Thanks newtlover art activist barbie is the best! And thanks everyone else for a good laugh before trip to dentist...
