London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign taking the UK Government to court

"Human rights rest on the accountability of governments, but this government seems content with using women and girls human rights as a bargaining chip to stay in power. On Friday, we began legal proceedings against the government, and launched a crowdfund to fund our case. We are a volunteer, grassroots campaign and we are worried about the costs of taking the government to court, but this is happening on our watch, and we are ready to push for change through every route. We might not win our case, but we will keep going. The North doesn’t need to be next. It needs to be now."

I will get behind this, the UK was my saving when I needed an abortion

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/07/2019 07:24

Wonderful women. I shall help with the thing we can’t mention

FermatsTheorem · 09/07/2019 07:59

Grabthar Pm me details of the "thing we can't talk about" and I'll send you a contribution.

IrenetheQuaint · 09/07/2019 08:08

I was about to donate but they've already exceeded their £15k target!

butteryellow · 09/07/2019 08:17

Wow - well done to them.

I think this really shows the misogyny still present in the world, when the EU will push all sorts of legislation, but the continued denial of womens' right to body autonomy is quietly ignored.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, all its citizens can also be Irish Citizens - both Ireland and the rest of the UK allow abortion - how on earth are women in NI still having to fight for the access that women all around them have - why aren't politicians making it happen rather than being forced into it (rhetorical. I know why)

17k good things... but surely they'll need more than that to take on the govt?

I'm chipping a pack of chips in.

LangCleg · 09/07/2019 08:44

Will be contributing later in the week. Thanks for the heads up!

Fermats - you can find a link to that which shall not be named in the OP's linked article.

FermatsTheorem · 09/07/2019 08:45

Thanks Lang - obviously skimmed it too quickly while half-asleep.

OvaHere · 09/07/2019 08:48

Wow that's great. Will look for the unmentionable thing.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/07/2019 18:54

Did I just read that MPs just voted to make abortion and same sex marriage legal in Northern Ireland??

Two4Tuesday · 09/07/2019 19:38

Yes!

Well... in the event that Stormont isn't up and running by the 21st October, Westminster are now in the position where they will need to legislate for the extension of same sex marriage and the liberalisation of abortion law.

How this will work in practice is still very vague but is a welcome step towards progress in NI!
