Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Do you think this is misandry, or is it just light-hearted humour?

There's a post on my facebook which makes me a little uncomfortable. It's something like "your husband comes home drunk and in bed you find he still has a condom on, what do you do?" And all the responses are comments like "stab him, cut his dick off, set him on fire" etc. Quite violent but suggesting acts of violence against a man who has cheated is funny?

Surely domestic violence is such a serious issue it shouldn't be joked about either way?

I don't know why but I always think misandry is such a silly word, a sort of made up word without any real substance

traceyracer · 08/07/2019 00:08

What about the example I gave?

It's not misandry, it's not prejudice against men as a class.

It's quite a hyperbolic expression of understandable anger towards a specific situation.

OccasionalKite · 08/07/2019 00:15

You are fishing!

LassOfFyvie · 08/07/2019 00:21

My first reaction is I'm glad I have so far to have missed out on having a Facebook account.

The question posed is so absurd I can't imagine even formulating a reply. I assume that the question was intended to provoke the sort of idiotic responses it got?

My second reaction would be to question why I was part of this Facebook group.

Re misandry - there was a recent thread where a poster posted men should have no rights in how children are brought up as their only contribution was to masturbate into the vagina of the women who subsequently bears the child and other extreme views. I think misandry would have described that attitude.

In the situation you are describing I think deeply unpleasant people who are probably a bit thick is sufficient.

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 00:32

Misandry is real but the scenario you are describing suggests to me whoever came up with it is unfamiliar with condoms, penises, or both.

sakura184 · 08/07/2019 00:42

I just don't think misandry is a real thing.

Racism and sexism have institutional power behind them.

The power goes one way--> white people have power over black people and hatred of black people is racism
ー--> men have power over women and hatred of women is misogyny

Misandry has no power behind it and just sounds a bit jokey and made up

sakura184 · 08/07/2019 00:46

That shouldn't have crossed out.

There used to be an excellent article circulating about the origin of the word misandry. It was very enlightening and showed how basically misandry was in no way an equivalent to misogyny.

Well it's obvious anyway, words have power. Misogyny conjure up images of Jack the Ripper maybe, or at the very least a serial killer of women, like Elliot Rogers

Misandry evokes women sniggering on Facebook .

Men are scared women will laugh at them and women are scared men will kill them, somebody once said

LassOfFyvie · 08/07/2019 00:53

Misandry has no power behind it and just sounds a bit jokey and made up

The thread I'm referring to, which was deleted, contained views which went way beyond "sniggering on Facebook" or "a bit jokey" As for power, if the poster I'm referring to is a parent her views may well have power over her children.

CharlieParley · 08/07/2019 01:00

Neither. I don't see what's funny about it, it doesn't make any sense and one unfunny, highly unlikely scenario resulting in answers that suggest they're not taking it serious either does not make misandry.

The views referred to by LassofFyvie would come far closer to my understanding of what misandry entails.

sakura184 · 08/07/2019 01:02

Thing is, feminists get angry they even have to quote the two women murdered every week at the hands of men in the UK.

The feminist anger at the banality of femIcide under patriarchy is mockingly referred to as misandry.

sakura184 · 08/07/2019 01:03

Seriously , only someone who thinks female deaths are a banal non occurence could ever take the word misandry seriously

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:13

For the record, the idea that black people can’t be racist is bullshit too. It’s fuck all to do with power. That’s the same argument that TRAs are pulling. If you hate people as a group you are a bigot.

sakura184 · 08/07/2019 01:24

So if a black person hates white people for what they've done historically and continue to do this makes them ... what? Racist? A bigot?
Interesting.
It's almost like we should give up on black lives matter and feminism and we should just pack up and go home if criticizing power structures is seen as bigotry

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:30

Yes.

Oh, fuck off. Nobody is saying black lives don’t matter. Fucking apologise for suggesting I said that.

You get two minutes and then I report your comment.

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:33

Your two minutes are up.

LassOfFyvie · 08/07/2019 01:35

So if a black person hates white people for what they've done historically and continue to do this makes them ... what? Racist? A bigot?

Yes it does. I'm sure you don't agree.

That is a non - sequitur. Irrational hatred because of a particular characteristic over which a person has no control doesn't stop being irrational hatred simply because the person doing the hating belongs to a group who as a class suffers or suffered oppression.

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:37

Do we get to hate Germans and the Japanese for WWII?

Do I get to hate the English for the Potato Famine?

Mummoomoocow · 08/07/2019 01:38

It makes me so sad that feminism can be so hypocritical.

God it makes me sick for my infant son.

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:39

Criticising power structures isn’t the same as hating individuals.

AlwaysComingHome · 08/07/2019 01:43

It’s Antifa logic. You are a hater, I’m a freedom fighter.

lydiamajora · 08/07/2019 02:47

I hate this mindset that a lot of social-justice-minded people have where this kind of violent rhetoric is a-ok as long as it is aimed at privileged groups. I don't think the facebook example is misandry. However, this assertion that only white people can be racist and only men can be sexist is not only blatantly untrue, it is also used as an excuse to justify all kinds of atrocious statements and actions because they are directed at the "right" targets.

If you want to know why people on the left don't bat an eye when GC feminists are being threatened with rape and death, punched, stalked, etc, it is because violence doesn't count when it comes from the oppressed and is aimed at their oppressors (didn't you know?).

White guy walking down the street with a baseball bat with racial slurs painted on it? Unspeakable. Transwoman with a baseball bat and explicit threats against GC feminists written on a shirt covered in fake blood? Fine. Totally fine. Worthy of an art exhibit, in fact.

Even if you do not care at all about the people you are "punching up" at, you should care that it is incredibly hypocritical and makes you look bad. You can't ask for diversity and tolerance and then turn around and say "Except for these people; you can be as nasty and vitriolic as you like to these people because it doesn't count as bigotry."

(Sorry for the rant, but this is a huge weakness in the current philosophy of the progressive left and it bothers me a lot)

BatShite · 08/07/2019 03:20

I don't really believe misandry exists.

The example you give no, I would not say was whats taken to be misandry. However it is deeply unfunny (meant as a joke?!)and yes, promoting violence. With DV rates at what they are, yeah, definitely not a good thing to be posting or sharing. And anyone who does share it with a 'haha' kind of post..has no sense of humour either IMO.

BatShite · 08/07/2019 03:22

The feminist anger at the banality of femIcide under patriarchy is mockingly referred to as misandry.

This kind of thing, is why I dfon't really believe misandry is a thing. I have only ever seen misandry be cried, in respons to women discussing feminist topics. Usually buy a guy who is but hurt that women do not accept his 'NAMALT' plea, or whatever. Never seen it used by people who are not..MRA like in their views.
