Really pleased that PinkNews is finally getting its comeuppance.

"Last week ⁦*@PinkNews⁩ published a defamatory story about me. I’m pleased to have secured a full apology, a donation to a charity of my choice - @UKLGIG* - & full payment of my legal costs. Their apology and my statement are here"

Won't stop them printing lies again though.
It's like the Daily Mail. They have a specific budget set aside for libel/legal costs so they can print whatever they want, they can afford it.
No one reads the retractions really. The damage they want to do is done already.

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when the editorial staff had to agree to print this...

Last week we published and tweeted a story claiming Joanna Cherry QC the MP For Edinburgh South West and the SNP Justice and Home Affairs Spokesperson was being investigated for homophobia. The claim was untrue and we would like to apologise unreservedly to Ms Cherry.

It is well known that Ms Cherry is a human rights lawyer. She came out as a lesbian over 30 years ago and campaigned against section 28. She has spent a lifetime marching and campaigning for the rights of the LGBT+ community and as a politician regularly speaks up for their rights in parliament and beyond.

It was not our intention nor is it in our interest to alienate any member of the LGBT+ community and we are truly sorry for the harm caused.

We are happy also to confirm that we have made a donation to the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group at Ms Cherry’s request in compensation for the damage done and we have paid Ms Cherry’s legal costs.

In a statement Ms Cherry said: “I am pleased that the PinkNews has withdrawn this damaging and hurtful allegation. I believe in equal rights for all. It is not acceptable for lesbians who speak up for women and girls’ rights and against hateful speech and abuse to be denigrated. I hope the LGBTI+ movement can resume its previous habit of respectful debate over differences of opinion within the community.”

PinkNews wouldn't know the truth if they fell over it, but hopefully Joanna's set a precedent.

Sharron Davies is taking legal advice over comments made by Owen Jones.

I bet that retraction was put together through gritted teeth. Good they done it though, keep up the amazing work Joanna Flowers

IsThatYourOverbite · 03/07/2019 22:29

She is a force to be reckoned with and I am glad the rag is being held to account for a change.

littlbrowndog · 03/07/2019 22:33

Who better to help Murray out and enlighten Mearns Academy?

TriptychDebbie · 03/07/2019 23:10

There's a fundraising page for the lad who was expelled and afaik she was tagged in some tweets re his expulsion @IsThatYourOverbite

I’m still trying to get my head round calling a lesbian homophobic. Good news indeed.

Backinthecloset123 · 04/07/2019 03:31

Can anyone link for me, or explain what the defamation was please, I can't find it. TIA.

MoleSmokes · 04/07/2019 04:54

It is mentioned in the apology @Backinthecloset123

Birdsfoottrefoil · 04/07/2019 10:07

That is good though I would have preferred her to ask for a donation to Transgender trend - not objecting to her choice but I would love for PinkNews to have to have published that they had donated to them.

RubberTreePlant · 04/07/2019 10:11

Good.

ArcheryAnnie · 04/07/2019 10:53

She's brilliant.

I hope she's got that framed on her wall. Pink News must be FUMING (good MN word there, don't think I've ever used it before) about this.

I think Pink News is well-funded, but it's not tabloid levels of well-funded, so anything that costs them money can only be a good thing. They are an absolute fucking disgrace, and a shame to what the newspaper used to be before it went full woman-hating.

Breathlessness · 04/07/2019 10:58

Isn’t it time they drop the L and use GBT+?Or just changed it to Born Male because those seem to be the people Stonewall et al care about.

JoyceJeffries · 04/07/2019 11:31

Good on her.
I don’t agree with her politics but nonetheless I have a huge amount of respect for her.

TriptychDebbie · 04/07/2019 20:35

I think the LGB need to drop the T Breathlessness

I sometimes seek assistance from her office on a professional level. Wonderful woman and a great team around her. Glad she got an apology

Aspley · 04/07/2019 21:36

I see some people say that because someone is a lesbian they cannot be homophobic. This is not true.

Some of the worst homophobia I encountered on twitter was from gay men and lesbians who were perfectly happy to call me a bigot for my sexuality.
I encountered the; "of course no one is going to force you have sex with a transwoman but by the way if you don't you are a bigot" several times.
Homophobia is coming from within LGBT.
