How do you provide a urine sample?

Had to yesterday, i had one of those little narrow specimen bottles- how do you women out there go about this?

Whenever I've given a sample at the doctors, they give me a kidney bowl to pee into then a type of syringe to contain the urine. I bring back from the toilet a capped during filled with urine. Got given one of those small containers when I was younger and ended up with piss on my jeans.

Aaarrgghhh · 28/06/2019 14:32

Syringe* not during.

Aaarrgghhh · 28/06/2019 14:34

Just to add. I think this is a valid question and have thought about how easy it must be for men compared to women. I'd also wager that more women do provide urine samples simply because of pregnancy, so it's confusing that they are so badly designed. Except the syringe system we seem to have, it's much better.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/06/2019 15:30

It's a good question. I've just been looking at buying Caroline Criado-Perez's "Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men", and as soon as I saw this thread title I immediately thought 'yup, those sample bottles can NOT be pee'd into by a woman!'

It's a long time since I've had to give a sample and I honestly don't remember how I did it. The kidney/bowl/syringe combo sounds the most practical, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I was given.

Should I ever in the future be given one of these tiny sample bottles to pee into, I think I shall come back to the doctor proffering a wet bottle. It will be wet with water from the tap, but it might be interesting to see if the penny drops ...

picklemepopcorn · 28/06/2019 17:07

It's not off topic!

Ohyesiam · 28/06/2019 17:09

Pee in the pot.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 28/06/2019 17:14

I'm another who has to wash the pot afterwards. I've often thought they were a disaster for women.

Sorry, posted and was busy and forgot. Yes, will admit Caroline Praid Perez’s book came to mind in overlooking female folk - but carry on with the troll huntiu

Yes it'll go all over your hands. Screw the lid on, wash the pot, wash your hands, done. It's just wee.

butterry · 29/06/2019 01:03

I don't understand everyone saying they wash the container as mine always has the printed label sticker already attached and you can't get that wet! I usually wee into another container and decant

PerspicaciaTick · 29/06/2019 01:08

I peed in a largish, soft, plastic pot (like the type that Xmas puddings come in). Then squash the sides to make a narrow spout and pour it into the sample bottle over the sink. Very rarely spill anything or get any on my hands.
The hospital gynea dept used to provide disposable foil bowls for this in all the toilets - which is where I got the idea.

DanaPhoenix · 29/06/2019 03:15

Yes AncientsLights I did wonder if the op was referring to a mid stream sample. This is why pelvic floor exercises are so important, start them early, not as a "bandaid" post birth.

I've had chronic uti for the last 9 months so I'm getting to be an expert on urine samples. I use a plastic measuring jug that is kept specifically for the purpose, I rinse it out before & after producing a sample, drop it in the toilet, do my wee, lift it out, fill my sample tube, flush the excess, wash the jug & my hands, leave the jug upside down to dry.

HorsewithnoPissToTake · 29/06/2019 08:06

..but carry on with the troll huntiu

Thanks. I think our efforts are workiu

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/06/2019 15:38

sample bottles are not particularly easy for either sex. more of a chance if you have an appendage to direct in the right direction.

the toilet at the hospital has a ledge to put the cardboard bowl on and children pee into that. then pour in.

Her0utdoors · 29/06/2019 17:52

Concidering the average penis-have can't get all of their wee in an 18" diameter toilet bowl, it's massively unlikely they are able to direct their flow into a shallow tube less than 1" across.
Just busk it like the rest of us OP.
