Julian Castro - Trans females need abortions (US Democratic debates)

I was reading about last nights debates and one of the candidates when speaking about the abortion debate brought the trans community into it by talking about trans females.

Now everyone is very confused about who he thinks he is talking about exactly, whether he understands that transwomen cannot become pregnant or whether he meant transmen.

The upshot of this is that transmen and non binaries are annoyed (at their erasure I guess) and everyone is thinking what the hell?

He also tweeted something equally vague and meaningless along the same lines.

I'm sure whatever he was trying to say he meant well but it just highlights how obstructive to proper debate and meaningful policy 'woke' newspeak is. How the hell is the average voter meant to interpret complete word salad?

The assumption on that thread is that he’s made a silly mistake. But his post reads entirely accurately - that women need access to abortion - and he could well just be refusing to bow down to language control and he knows that trans men are actually women. His tweet could read:

“All women and that includes those who want to call themselves something else have the right to an abortion”

(Deliberately struck through by me)

I suspect he’s not confused, he’s just trying to word it without compromising his beliefs.

God that thread. They're trying to force him to say "people with vaginas" or "people with wombs" or "people who are able to fall pregnant" or whatever the fuck we're meant to say, because those turns of phrase acknowledge that TWAW.
He didn't want to.
Good on him I think he needs some support.

OvaHere · 27/06/2019 11:22

You are probably right. I think he was trying to talk specifically about female biology without getting jumped on. Other places I've seen discussing this seem to think he was saying that TW need abortions though.

It just highlighted to me one of the (endless) issues created when people frame things in terms of gender identity. It just causes confusion and definitely does nothing to help women that need reproductive rights.

Do not forget us enbies who have uteri please.

So, totally non female or male to the point they have to make some fanciful big statement to the not giving one shiny shit world; but still know full well they are of the sex who can get upduffed and demand inclusion?

nauticant · 27/06/2019 11:34

The average voter will be presented with stuff like this, or something from Trump that appears to be direct and straightforward. (Even if it's a load of muddled shit.) If the average voter isn't woke to begin with, I'd say the Democrats have a problem.

I know! The assumption that those of us who can't be arsed to declare ourselves speshul are just loving the gender stereotypes of being female enraged me.

But my new favourite word is "upduffed" so thanks.

BorisBadunov · 27/06/2019 15:22

Yes I saw that too on the debate, and thought WTF.

I suspect he doesn’t really know anything about trans people, including a deep misunderstanding of what a ‘trans female ‘ is.

This tweet and all of the replies to it should fill me with hope, but I just despair.

Hope because the vast majority of those replying show themselves to be in turns petty, nitpicky, never satisfied, completely bonkers (I might have a uterus but my sex as well as my gender are non-binary, not female), incomprehensible, arrogant, demanding, entitled and selfish. Anyone reading that who is not part of the wokerati will be completely turned off by all that.

Despair because despite the complete bonkers nature of this whole issue, it keeps on going and people keep repeating these nonsensical statements without once stopping to think.

But worse still, all of those young women on that thread denying their sex who cannot understand that their demands undermine the fight for women's reproductive rights. If men can get pregnant, denying women reproductive rights is no longer a part of the oppression of women by men. Which weakens the pro-choice movement. And all these non-binary, non-female uterus-havers can think about in this is that they feel icky or sad or distressed if they are included in the female sex class.

As PP point out though, the thread does show rather beautifully how confused and confusing this all is, because clearly some of these adult human females not-identifying as women accept that they are female while others vehemently deny it.

This is slightly off topic, and fairly outing but I know of a couple who Foster children and recently fostered a young boy who was removed, along with his older brother, from their family after the older brother was sexually abused. The older brother now identifies as a girl, and is concerned that he may be pregnant following the sexual abuse. The social worker advised his Foster family to reassure her (the young boy) that the abuse happened too long ago and if she (the young boy) was pregnant they would know by now. Foster dad told the social worker they have been reassuring him by saying he cannot get pregnant because he has a penis.
The social worker was horrified, told Foster dad he was transphobic and the boy was removed from their care a few days later, onto a new family who presumably will validate his feelings and completely ignore the fact that it stems entirely from his hugely traumatic upbringing.

CharlieParley · 27/06/2019 21:20

JFC Myusernameismud I wish I could just say no, that just couldn't happen but too many fucking things that couldn't happen are happening now. But yeah, I know social workers who are leaving because they cannot buy into this crap but without doing so, they keep having too much trouble.

RiotAndAlarum · 28/06/2019 19:53

Oh, jeez. From twee to patronising ("big whoopsie" - FFS, who talks like that?), these people are making human rights - a great and noble desire - look like a discretionary distraction.

Human rights really matter, and here people are pissing about calling their identities cutesy names, while Putin mocks the idea that we have choices: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-europe-48807705/russia-s-vladimir-putin-liberalism-outlived-its-purpose
