Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Possibly the most biased article I have ever read in a mainstream paper.

Not editorial, a supposed news article without the slightest pretense of balance. AIBU to think this one is particularly awful?

Sorry but that made me laugh. The article mentions misgendering in such an earnest tone as one of the crimes that "TERFs" commit, that I was seeing everyone I know just eyerolling so hard...

And yes, you are right, it's a terrible article. Especially in light of the harassment that the small group defending the right of lesbians to be same-sex attracted received at the same Pride march.

RoyalCorgi · 24/06/2019 19:28

This is extraordinary:

"The acronym refers to people who preach hate and exclusion against transgender women in the name of feminism.
They often use disruptive, aggressive protest tactics, including storming a meeting and intimidating transgender activists, and even deliberately misgendering them."

When have feminists ever disrupted trans meetings? It has always been the other way around.

These people really do like to lie, lie and lie again, don't they?

TriptychDebbie · 24/06/2019 19:28

It's a load of bollocks. There have been a lot more articles more balanced than that. I wouldn't worry about the Indy too much, it's a comic for the hard of thinking. Totally irrelevant.

NotTerfNorCis · 24/06/2019 19:29

The acronym refers to people who preach hate and exclusion against transgender women in the name of feminism.

They often use disruptive, aggressive protest tactics, including storming a meeting and intimidating transgender activists, and even deliberately misgendering them.

Feminism is about inclusivity and empowering women – all women – which is why TERF ideology is so at odds with most forms of feminism.

That doesn't sound like something you'd expect from a mature journalist in a respected paper to be fair. It sounds like an excitable school kid.

PartisanPatisserie · 24/06/2019 19:33

I actually checked to see whether it was a special school kid issue because the writing is appalling. Talking of which, did anyone read Travis Labanza's effort for the Metro?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/06/2019 19:34

even deliberately misgendering them

literal violence!

blimey we've become decadent haven't we?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 24/06/2019 19:35

when did feminists storm a genderist meeting? Confused

donquixotedelamancha · 24/06/2019 19:48

when did feminists storm a genderist meeting?

The example given is Posie crashing a meeting from some trans lobbyist in the US. Given the only example they could come up with was another country it makes this statement a little silly:

They often use disruptive, aggressive protest tactics

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2019 19:50

They often use disruptive, aggressive protest tactics

LOL

Does that mean writing letters to MPs or holding quiet, orderly meetings that are streamed/available to public viewing online?

Would love to see the evidence for that one.

Janie143 · 24/06/2019 19:50

They often use disruptive, aggressive protest tactics, including storming a meeting and intimidating transgender activists
Never has there been a sentence written which demonstrates the RVO of DARVO so perfectly

donquixotedelamancha · 24/06/2019 19:52

Arguably 'storming' seems a little much for Posie and one or two other people walking into a room where two people were meeting and interrupting them.

Doesn't seem as bad to say 'at least one TERF was quite rude this one time'.

I supposed there was also the Sitting On Chairs with menaces, I mean that one needed half a dozen police. Also Beard Wearing while in possession of a dodgy mankini.

OP posts:
AnyOldPrion · 24/06/2019 20:03

I’m sorry, but I found it so ludicrous as to be almost funny. Quotes like this “TERFS and SWERFS are poisoning the LGBTQ community with their vitriol and hate.” will mean nothing to anyone outside of their tiny echo chamber. I can imagine normal people all over the country with faces like this: Confused

And as a PP said, textbook DARVO. This nonsense will pass soon won’t it? Please tell me it will. They are utterly losing the plot.

Apollo440 · 24/06/2019 20:03

Trans activists seem to be shameless brazen liars. But that's all they can do because nothing they say stands up to the whiff of scrutiny.

Apollo440 · 24/06/2019 20:05

We have obviously rattled them. Their hysterical reactions doesn't help them one bit but it's helping everyone see just who they are.

jamrollyolly · 24/06/2019 20:07

I think it's the mass, organised writing of thank you cards that's scared them the most.

What's a SWERF? Is it like surf and turf?

RochelleGoyle · 24/06/2019 20:08

Yes, they're allowed to criticise/insult/threaten/harass and assault women but a single woman, calmly expressing her opinion in a balanced manner is a dangerous, hate-filled TERF who must not only be silenced but ideally lose both her reputation and career for her failure to capitulate.

It's the very essence of misogyny that they are getting away with this and it makes me so, so angry.

RochelleGoyle · 24/06/2019 20:09

Sorry, I didn't even directly address the post. I'm just so pissed off with this.

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2019 20:11

Don't forget the discussion about popping mobhanded up to a TRA lobby public meeting to provide them with squash and sandwiches.

Y'know, as opposed to kettling people in stairwells while wearing balaclavas or punching out pensioners.

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2019 20:27

It's the very essence of misogyny that they are getting away with this and it makes me so, so angry.

Its also the very essence of personality disorder and social dysfunction. If you look at who is tying up the most Local Authority staff time, effort, resources by endless inundating of emails, multiple ones a day on the same subject, phone calls, legal proceedings, who is the cause of staff going off sick with stress, you'll find a small number of people in each authority, very well known, all of whom behave like this. No way to make them happy as its the battle and attention that meets their needs, refusal to cope with reality or facts, inability to follow procedure or accept findings, huge amounts of emotion and anger and accusations and threats - a few forward thinking authorities are starting to formulate strategies to recognise vexatious complainants and to set up a different way of responding once it becomes apparent that normal process will never work and the person will just endlessly go on eating up time and resources. Society needs to get a lot better at spotting these people and knowing how to respond to them without buying into a whole lot of pathology and manipulation.

DV/DA survivors usually know a lot about such people. Survivors of narcissist marriages and relatives know a lot about them. Prisons are pretty good at spotting them too, and knowing how to handle them. The TRA lobby has a few well known people in high places who due diligence and basic competency tests should have screened out from the start.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/06/2019 20:36

What's a SWERF?

Women who do not support prostitution. Bigots.

jamrollyolly · 24/06/2019 21:17

Thanks Don!

Sensible Women Expressing Reasonable Feminism then?

Lumene · 25/06/2019 00:02

“One person called Isla, who knows the people in the photograph...”

🤣 My six year old nephew could do better than that.

The Indie is a joke not a newspaper nowadays, so sad.
