Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The Sims 4 pride update and gender neutral bathrooms.

I have been playing The Sims for years and 3 years ago they changed the gender settings to allow players to create Sims that are transgender now they have introduced gender neutral bathrooms in the game and different pride flags that also include flags for different gender identities.

I am on the fence with things that surround gender and the way things are going. Is it wrong to think that a video game with a 12 age rating should avoid things like this. In the new pack that EA just realised they have created a character who appears to be trans.

Also just wanted to let parents know about this incase they aren't comfortable with this.

Jesus Christ, is there no escape?

Is v gendered game anyway in first place with character clothes hair etc

But you could get rid of that and dress your female character in male gender clothes etc if you wished

Assume that was same for makeup never checked.

So, meh to that I guess.

What are they doing about babies with this?

MenuPlant · 23/06/2019 22:18

Also when I've looked the toilets weren't gendered anyway eg at the park there's one set of toilets for all which is fine as it's a computer game and you can see through the walls and see then use toilet bathe etc...

So that's a bit odd. Imo.

Who can have babies though the hell are they handing that!???

These people exist in the real world, so why shouldn't a real world simulation game reflect it?

AlwaysComingHome · 23/06/2019 22:24

It’s a video game so why can’t they just change sex? They aren’t constrained by biology in the way we mere mortals are. If transwomen are women why not just push a button and change sex?

There is a whole lot of silly stuff in The Sims. The last time I played it (some years ago), the character creation bit had the option to select a) whether the Sim's body appeared male or female and b) whether the Sim was the sort of Sim who could impregnate or become pregnant. There didn't have to be any kind of match with this.

But you know, you could also create a Sim with blue skin or who was a werewolf or something. So... I mean I rolled my eyes because it's obvious why they chose to do that but I couldn't really bring myself to care.

Generally, I couldn't give a shit about computer games. But I did note in passing that Digital Spy reported this stunningly unexciting development, and illustrated the story with a picture of a Sim pre-teen child who just looked like a girl in summer clothes by the pool. I really didn't understand, because that's apparently not the Sim in question.

Are there Sims world domestic violence shelters?

Sparklywolf · 24/06/2019 00:04

I'm a big simmer and ok with it, none of the trans options are forced on you they are just there if that's your preferred way of playing.

I think the existence of wicked whims and extreme violence mods could/should be of greater concern to parents of young simmers than the option to make a trans sim.

In real life I wholeheartedly believe men can't get pregnant, however neither are mermaids, aliens or vampires a real life choice. Just gotta be clear on the difference between fiction and reality.
