A MODEST PROPOSAL

For preventing the darker skinned people in the land from experiencing racism, preventing racial tensions and preventing the resulting burden on society and creating great benefits to the publick.

by Whodathunkit

It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the streets and houses crowded with mothers of swarthy appearance, followed by three, four, or six children, all displaying similar epidermal colouration, and causing great offence to all.

I think it is agreed by all parties, that this prodigious number of children of darker hued skin is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom, a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of helping these children to become useful members of the common-wealth, would deserve so well of the publick, as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.

As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of our projectors, I have reached an important conclusion.

For too long darker skinned persons have had to struggle and fight agains oppression in a racist society, of this there is no doubt.

Many darker skinned people dream of being able to live in a wonderful world in which they share all the entitlements and privileges that heir fairer skinned neighbours take for granted.

Various products, many prohibitively expensive or illegal and thus beyond the acquisition of the general public, do possess the most wonderful effect of transforming the skin of our swarthy brothers and sisters into a most charming and agreeable pinkish shade.

There are, as always, many nay sayers who complain in the most vigorous terms that these products may generate the most harmful diseases and dangers in those who make use of them, however any educated person must of course balance these harms in relation to the undoubted benefits to society of purging this most odious problem of racism from our dear land.

What better solution to this urgent crisis of inequality than to make these wondrous skin lightening products available on the NHS to those persons whose natural coloration places them at a disadvantage in all aspects of their life?

Some commentators will no doubt opine that the wish to lighten one’s skin is indicative of some underlying problem of the mind, a problem they term “internalised racism” but this ridiculous claim may reasonably be challenged by speaking to any one of thousands of people, currently undergoing a journey of “racial transition” who will tell it how it is and “speak their truth” about their brave and stunning journey of transformation.

I profess, in the sincerity of my heart, that I have not the least personal interest in endeavouring to promote this necessary work, having no other motive than the publick good of my country, by advancing the progression of our citizens, creating equality and benefitting our land for the good of all.

binary thinking where everything is reduced to right and wrong, raw and cooked, clean and dirty, good and evil etc

This is why we need to remember true vs false dichotomies. "Right" vs "wrong" is a false dichotomy, "right" vs "not right" is a true dichotomy. In law we only ever find people "guilty" or "not guilty", never "innocent". Which is partly why "you can't object to cis it's just the opposite of trans" fails because the true opposite of trans is not trans. I'm not cis, I reject it fully. If you are "trans", the best you can call me is "not trans".

Comparing eating the babies of poor Irish families, to skin lightening creams?

Well, not exactly. No babies were eaten, of course. Swift proposed this morally repugnant apparent solution to hunger/poverty among "Popists" that also conveniently benefitted the oppressors- if you read the original, he says something like the landlords, who usually feast on the parents (i.e. the abused Irish peasantry), should rightly have first dibs over their juicy one-year-old babies, too.

Sadly, skin-lightening treats are all too real, but OP proposes funding them as a [morally repugnant] solution to the problem of racism, one which also benefits the oppressors (because as everyone turns shiny white, the world will be rid of these troubling dark people- hooray!).

In the original, Swift mentions that the cannibalism of Irish babies will also conveniently cull the population of Popists (i.e. dirty Catholics), which proposed genocide of course is echoed in OP's proposal.

Both are ridiculous and troubling... and both bang are on the money.

Haha, sorry... it was a bit evil of me to choose a username taken from a waltz. Still, better to be LCed than Rickrolled. Grin

Oh yes, an important point!

I'm not cis, I reject it fully. If you are "trans", the best you can call me is "not trans".

Which brings us back to "lack" and a woman being defined not by who she is but by what she is not.

Vagina (etymological root / meaning = sword sheath) is another example of this attribution, our reproductive orifice being named after a concave object that exists in solely for the purpose of containing a convex object and has no use outside of that role.

I am really tired, too tired to think properly but I just wanted to thank the very thoughtful responses here.

It was quite scary posting the OP as I was anxious that it would be misunderstood and cause offence as so often happens with satire.

Also, if anyone wants to develop this concept more fully, please feel free to take it and run with it.

I have so much to do and so little time

Oh, cis. That word is misogynist bollocks.

RiversDisguise · 13/06/2019 09:25

Agreed. When you see the word cis now, the word terf never seems to be far away. I wonder what new words they will concoct to denigrate women in coming years.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 13/06/2019 11:05

The goal is to get rid of the word "woman" in relation to women altogether. There'll be men (men who identify as men), women (men who identify as women), and breeders/ bleeders/ some other horrendous dehumanising language.

AWAs: Stop reducing women to their biology!
Also AWAs: Uterus havers, vagina owners, menstrautors etc
