The two most subscribed beauty channels on YouTube are both by males

The top two beauty channels are James Charles (13mil subs) and Jeffry Star (14mil subs). There’s been a big controversy with James Charles recently and Jeffry Starr overtook him as most subscribed.

I mean seriously? Surely MAKEUP as a category should be favouring women?

Most of the people who follow this content are women. I think we need to acknowledge that woman are guilty of being sexist and favouring men over women, and assuming they know more Because they are men. These two channels are not even good at makeup. It’s way too over the top for woman because men naturally need more makeup if they’re trying to look “feminine”. It was just a shock to me that the top two are BOTH men when overall there are way more female beauty channels.

There are so many WOMEN makeup channels that are huge- nikkitutorials, Tati to name a few. If you were going to get riled about anything is the lack of diversity in makeup on YouTube right now- lack of big makeup channels run by women of colour, black women, Muslim women. These two men are Gay men - a group that is already underrepresented.

Make up as a thing is totally out of control. Just walk away.

JaneJeffer · 15/05/2019 15:31

I like Wayne Goss. He's the only makeup person I watch.

lookatallthepeaches · 15/05/2019 16:15

The only beauty videos I've ever watched are John Maclean, I think he's pretty wonderful

PlinkPlink · 15/05/2019 16:32

Yes to Wayne Goss. Love his videos.

And make up has been over the years regarded as a woman's thing but is increasingly used by males too.
I got asked to do a product test at the No.7 counter in Boots the other day by a lad who had lovely mascara on. I wanted to know what brand it was but I had to get moving.

There are literally millions of women make up videos. Panacea81 has done marvellously well for herself through YouTube.

I think without the actual statistics it would be silly to get upset.

I’m not getting “riled up” I just find it strange that this is the one industry women should be dominating have the two top people being men.

Yes I know there are other successful women channels but they aren’t the most successful!! Jeez

I'm another fan of John Maclean's fillums. Not even very interested in make up, but he is so funny!

RussellSprout · 15/05/2019 17:12

Don't see the feminist issue here, men are welcome to wear makeup.

Pipandmum · 15/05/2019 17:14

Maybe alot of the subscribers are men.

hipsterfun · 15/05/2019 17:14

Can we start calling this shit ‘cosmetics’ again?

Raspberry88 · 15/05/2019 17:17

Why should women be dominating make up? Seems a bit regressive. Anyway, people can follow who they want to on YouTube...can't control that!

Outofinspiration · 15/05/2019 17:22

People don't really watch JC and JS for the actual makeup application. It's their OTT personalities, the fact they are always having drama with someone, stuff like that. Have you watched any of the vids? They really aren't that much about the makeup, more about them.

MIdgebabe · 15/05/2019 17:28

Perhaps it is indicative of a general sexist belief that men are better than women, or more ambitious behaviour from the men, which is therefore a fair topic. In an even world there would be a 1 in 4(?) chance of 2 males. Of course if far fewer males run such channels, the odds of 2 men occupying the top spot drops.
It could be generalised. WHy are there so few Male primary school teachers and so many Male primary school heads?
Or we could think about how social media and the focus on followers perhaps helps to reinforce sterotypes such as men are better. Unlike traditional media which is usually given a responsibility to behave ( a little mo) more fairly.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 15/05/2019 17:47

I actually think people are subscribed to these two for the drama more than the make up.

If anything I’m glad there are men wearing make up, dressing in a way that isn’t gender conforming and happily doing it as men.

DpWm · 15/05/2019 17:47

You can very easily buy YouTube "Followers".... Just saying.

groundcontroltomontydon · 15/05/2019 18:42

I'm more of a World of Sacharelle person myself

Goosefoot · 15/05/2019 18:43

My daughter likes James Charles, though she rarely even wears make-up. As far as I can see, it's not really about anything you could wear every day, it's more like theatrical make up. The interest seems similar to the lady she watches who bakes exotic cakes.

Doyoumind · 15/05/2019 18:46

YABU. There are a lot of channels by women that have millions of subscribers.

sheshootssheimplores · 15/05/2019 18:49

I only know who you’re talking about because they’ve been discussed on a news website I read. However I did watch a Jeffrey Star video about everyone local knowing that the Kardashian boyfriend was shagging about and I have to say it was hilarious. He was very watchable. So I agree they probably have the highest subscribers because they are very entertaining as well as informative.

GeordieGenes · 15/05/2019 19:01

Surely that's up to the subscribers? They choose who to follow?

HumansCannotEverChangeSex · 15/05/2019 23:28

I’m a bit confused why women should be the top in make up videos. I don’t personally watch any, they don’t really interest me but it’s make up. Both men and women can wear it and so if someone is good enough whatever their sex, then they will obviously be the most watched. I don’t think make up makes you a woman, it’s common among women but to be fair, a shit tonne of men wear make up these days too and good on them to be fair.

OccasionalKite · 15/05/2019 23:44

Ha ha! Competitive make-up!

Janie143 · 16/05/2019 00:19

John Maclean fan here too The man

MrsFoxPlus4 · 16/05/2019 00:22

A large part of jeffrees following is from his MySpace music days as well though. But yeah James took over jeffree then lost his subscribers over the weekend due to some drama & allegations.

FeministCat · 16/05/2019 02:38

I am not a big makeup person so don’t follow/subscribe to any makeup channels, but I guess I also don’t don’t understand why makeup channels should favour female personalities just as it is “makeup”. Even when I was a teenager in the 90s it seemed it was my male friends who were more focused on the perfect eyeliner application and how to hide a blemish without obviously hiding a blemish than my female friends. You yourself think these channels are “over the top” for women so why assume a lot of their subscribers aren’t...men?

Plus, it’s YouTube. Personalities have huge followings because of drama and “hate follows” as much as for actual “substantive” content.
