Trans Youth and Education: National Issues and Solutions

Onn 20 June 201919*, Keele University – in partnership with Healthwatch Stoke-on-Trent – will run a one-day event on trans-inclusive education. The event is supported by the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion (KISI).
Despite progress in transgender rights over the last decade, many young trans people continue to experience educational inequalities and wider forms of discrimination as a result of their gender identity. This event seeks to create a setting for individuals with a speciality and interest in trans-inclusive education and will explore how trans inequalities can be addressed in education contexts through engagement with academics, charities, and organisations.
The event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr Anna Carlile (Goldsmiths, University of London). There will also be presentations by Mermaids UK, researchers, and individuals working with the trans community in order to identify and promote the social inclusion of trans individuals in schools and society more generally.
The event is aimed at a wide audience and has two key aims:

  1. to tackle issues of gender inequalities affecting trans youth;
2) to promote pragmatic approaches to supporting trans youth in schools and higher education. There is no cost to attend the event and lunch will be provided. Please register by 6th Junene* through the following link and specify any dietary and access requirements: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/trans-youth-and-education-national-issues-and-solutions-tickets-559808161288 Please contact Aimee Merrydew ([email protected]k) and/or Dr John Howlett ([email protected]k) if you have any questions about the event. With best wishes, Aimee

newtlover · 08/05/2019 20:20

MIdgebabe · 08/05/2019 20:34

ONe could just as easily write

Despite progress in womens rights over the last decades, many young females continue to experience educational inequalities and wider forms of discrim8nation as a result of their identity

It’s so sad there is such lack of cooperation and inability to find common ground

AncientLights · 08/05/2019 20:39

What are the educational opportunities trans youth lack, does anyone know?

OhHolyJesus · 08/05/2019 21:13

Fair enough newtlover stealth isn't one of my strong points, certainly not these days...

WrathofscumKlop · 08/05/2019 21:37

I'll be interested in hearing what they have to say.

Sex education, access to basic biology...

newtlover · 08/05/2019 23:01

haha
critical thinking springs to mind

GeordieGenes · 09/05/2019 00:04

Don't conferences encourage their speakers to answer questions from the audience?

This should be interesting...

RadicalStitch · 12/05/2019 00:23

Is anyone able to come? I may be able to but it's a bit of a trek
