seems particularly pertinent that he is writing about such Orwellian happenings!

Congrats and good luck, James.

I'd like to think that having at least two openly gender critical writers on the shortlist is a sign of something.

What about the others? Any wokey blokes or blue haired POMOs?

Extract from George Orwell collection of essays - "On Truth':

A party member is required, not only, to have the right opinions, but the right instincts. Many of the beliefs and attitudes demanded of him.......could not be stated without laying bare the contradictions inherent in Ingsoc ( prevailing orthodoxy). If he is a person naturally orthodox - a goodthinker -he will in all circumstances know, without taking thought, what is the true belief or the desirable emotion. But in any case elaborate mental training....makes him unwilling and unable to think too deeply on any subject whatever.

A party member is expected to have no private emotions, and no respite from enthusiasm. He is supposed to live in a continuous frenzy of hatred of foreign enemies and internal traitors. Speculations which might possibly induce a sceptical or rebellious attitude are killed in advance by his early acquired inner discipline. The first and simplest stage, which can be taught even to young children, is called Newspeak.

Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought.....failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc ( prevailing orthodoxy), and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity..........Blackwhite...when applied to an opponent, means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to party discipline it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary.

That Orwell quote pretty much covers every reason why I’d never join a political party. I like being free to judge policies and action and direct my vote accordingly.

Justhadathought · 09/05/2019 09:04

The desire of people to fit in with the group and to be on the 'right side' is a very powerful motivating force.

I sat in the chamber of Liverpool City Council and watched the assembled cross party councillors stand, and loudly cheer, the Mayor, Joe Anderson's, aggressive, full of invective speech at the end of the thoughtful, well considered speech of an invited guest ( a Liverpool Resister). It was a shocking scene to witness. We were all left shaken. and almost disbelieving of what we had witnessed.

That people will shout and cheer, and vote, on issues of which they have little knowledge, so as to be seen to toe the party line.

I have been pondering this boatyard and just and your posts are very helpful.

That Orwell quote pretty much covers every reason why I’d never join a political party

I am a Labour Party member because I believe an effective opposition is important ( although granted they’re not actually doing that at the moment), and I believe that the only way to achieve one that isn’t funded by the rich for the benefit of the rich is for ordinary people to put their hands in their pockets

However I don’t vote for them at the moment. I see myself as more of a funder than a member

Well done to James, richly deserved. And great to see Suzanne Moore on the list too

boatyardblues · 09/05/2019 12:07

I forgot to congratulate James on his deserved nomination. Thank you for being a voice of reason in this debate.

Also congratulations to Suzanne Moore, another voice of reason in these up-is-down times.
