I just thought it was really interesting

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/woman-milk-ducts-muscular-photo_uk_5cbf0088e4b0f7a84a750285

I had mastitis a couple of times while breastfeeding and it was soooo painful, the pain sort of makes more sense now looking at how delicate the ducts look.

Also interested that the article highlights how most anatomical pictures show male bodies by default and that............. women's bodies are different!!!

Fascinating and amazing. It is easy to see why the pain from mastitis feels like it runs in a line up the breast.

I can't understand why some of the commentators on twitter think it looks gross.

StopThePlanet · 24/04/2019 04:14

Beautiful and fascinating! How is it that I have seen so many depictions of musculature and female skeletons and have never seen this? Our bodies are so amazing!!!

GoodyMog · 24/04/2019 09:00

It's an incredible image, our bodies really are amazing

happydappy2 · 24/04/2019 09:37

I can’t understand why this sort of image is not in all biology books, in schools. It’s brilliant.

Callmejudith · 24/04/2019 09:40

Such a beautiful image. So depressing we've never seen it before!

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/04/2019 09:43

That should be the default image of the human body! Fascinating and crazy that it's 2019. I'm in my fifth decade and I have never seen that before.

Sexnotgender · 24/04/2019 09:49

Beautiful! I’m currently breastfeeding my 11 week old son and understand why I get the occasional blocked duct (ouch!) looking at that.

teawamutu · 24/04/2019 13:15

Awestruck. I have this equipment and used it without even realising how cool it was Grin

jay55 · 24/04/2019 17:32

It is amazing.

I went to one of those 'Bodies' exhibits and saw more skinless penises than I ever needed to but don't remember seeing any milk ducts.

VickyEadie · 24/04/2019 17:46

I have to confess that these sorts of images make my bum go funny (and not in a good way).

CuckooCuckooClock · 24/04/2019 17:53

That is very cool. I’m going to make it into a poster for my classroom (science teacher).
Thank you for drawing it to my attention.

Genderfreelass · 24/04/2019 18:02

Wow in my 40s and first time I have seen an image of female anatomy 😮 it's amazing tho and as I'm currently breastfeeding and get blocked ducts fairly regularly and mastitis it's fascinating to see this!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 24/04/2019 19:33

Dh looked faintly disgusted

I said ' dont be looking at it like that...you love them when they are covered with skin'

Im nearly 50 and ive never seen that type of anatomy picture (neither has dh) ...incredible, and sad

NewSchoolNewName · 24/04/2019 19:44

It’s a pretty picture, but

NewSchoolNewName · 24/04/2019 19:52

Posted too soon!

Anyway.

It’s a pretty picture, but apparently not an accurate one.

I’ve just seen a post on a breastfeeding Facebook group I’m on - hopefully screenshots attached - talking about how the photo is inaccurate, and references research about milk ducts.
There’s an average of about 9 milk ducts per breast, and they’re not all arranged in a pretty flower shape.

new

Do they have a correct picture

Cos ive just googled and they all look pretty similar to the picture above

If its wrong its wrong, but it would be good to see a proper photo... before i am actually 50

2rebecca · 24/04/2019 20:43

If you google female beast ducts and look at "images" the pictures on medicinenet.com are more realistic. Similar but less regular and well defined than the picture doing the social media rounds.
Female breasts are amazing though.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 24/04/2019 22:42

I follow a couple of breastfeeding sites and they've said the same - not very realistic, but again didn't post any alternative images, which I found really frustrating.

I've just googled as you suggested 2rebecca (thanks!) and it's fascinating - lots of different artistic interpretations but overall I do feel much better informed now. It's really shocking that this information isn't more widely available / known. It also strikes me that the lack of education and information readily available about breast structure is probably a bad thing in terms of early breast cancer detection.

Datun · 24/04/2019 23:29

I've just googled it too and it's pretty similar. Lots of different diagrams. But not vastly different from that picture.

And yes, it's striking that this is not a familiar sight.
