'Problematic' - calling card of the Ultra Woke?

Freespeecher · 21/04/2019 10:18

Whenever I read an article which has some kind of thought or behaviour described as 'problematic', it's inevitably a giveaway that the Ultra Woke want something they class as 'wrongthink' to be banned, shut down or otherwise expunged as it represents an unwelcome detour from the One True Path?

Do others agree? And are there other such phrases that set the Spidey Sense tingling?

Because "You are valid" seems like the most insipid statement of human worth I can imagine. "You are worth about the same as a useful bus ticket" isn't really something I'd appreciate someone giving me as an affirming phrase

Loving that sentiment Floral.

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 13:37

I love this thread. Other words I have come to detest are:

Nuance
Folk
Pronoun
Identity
Agency
Choice
Bigot
Phobic
Authentic

LangCleg · 21/04/2019 13:39

This thread is invalidating words which are used for critical thinking. That's dangerous.

All the LOLs ever LOLed.

Freespeecher · 21/04/2019 13:41

I appreciate it's bad form to bump one's own thread, but the absolute kicker for me is the pause, as in "That's (wait two beats) problematic".

Oh oh oh can I add "advanced biology"

TalkingintheDark · 21/04/2019 13:47

Nice reminder, Skyz, 'invalidating' is another one.

Good catch, SpartacusAutisticus Grin

TalkingintheDark · 21/04/2019 13:48

Ooh yes Sarah, “advanced biology” Grin Grin Grin

Nah, its pointing out words which seem to no longer have any meaning due to the 'woke' croud. Maybe at one time you would be right, but now words used for critical thinking are shut down by 'terf' and 'bigot', you seem to have it backwards

Lamaha · 21/04/2019 14:05

Inclusive
diversity
This is not the 50's
right side of history

Love this thread!
Also the people who reprimand others for using certain words are insinuating that "they" are just not nice people; WE are much nicer/kinder/more openminded/inclusive.

vicviking · 21/04/2019 14:13

Baby. Bathwater.
Do we women really want to go back to a time before anyone thought about diversity, inclusivity, gender roles, etc. Surely we can hang onto some of this stuff and weed out disingenuous claims. We claim to be critical thinkers don't we?

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 14:15

I wonder if you could just make up a load of bollox composite words from this thread and be taken seriously...

The diverse validity spectrum.
Problematic binary inclusion...

You could spout that shit and strike fear into the woke and cowardly - they'd be bowing, apologising and genuflecting in seconds.Grin

T1meForDebate · 21/04/2019 14:19

Literal violence = criticising, thinking otherly, presenting a reasoned contribution to a debate

Also #nodebate

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 14:24

Do we women really want to go back to a time

Context is everything. We are now forced into a preamble or contextualisation to use any words eg - I am a feminist, by that I mean someone, not an antifeminist, who prioritises the rights and wellbeing, by that I mean actual rights, of women and girls, and by women and girls I mean, those born female with XX chromosomes, etc, etc, et-fucking-cetera.

Because of the antifeminist, white male supremacist infiltration of progressive movements and deliberate appropriation and bastardisation of all its terms, this is where we are.

It's long winded, but what other choice is there?

PlasmaRain · 21/04/2019 14:30

Intersectional unless it’s to do with highways
Exclusionary (especially when they mean exclusive)
Inclusive (especially when they mean inclusionary)
Erasure unless talking about rubbing out pencil/an 80s pop group

Problematic. Oh shit there is some evidence that disproves my woke view.

No one is suggesting banning any of the words on this thread. Just pointing out they tell us much about those who use them.

Freespeecher · 21/04/2019 15:33

It's [insert current year here].

I wish they'd all get out their thesauruses and find a synonym for vitriol. That word sets my teeth on edge these days.

OldCrone · 21/04/2019 15:40

I use 'problematic'. I've used it in letters to my MP in the context of it being problematic that schools are being given guidance telling them that they should ignore the Equality Act and forget about safeguarding. Not because I wanted to shut down thinking, but because I wanted them to think about what the problems might be.

It hadn't occurred to me that it was a woke word. The phrase I can't stand is 'educate yourself'.

7Days · 21/04/2019 15:52

'Do better', said by a smug kid.

hipsterfun · 21/04/2019 15:55

‘Calling out’ this and that has become a favourite pastime of the sanctimonious.

Trousering · 21/04/2019 16:00

Dear Skyzalimit

If invalidating words is a failure of critical thinking can we have the word woman back please.

WeRiseUp · 21/04/2019 16:04

Yes. Words i'd like back first:

Woman
Girl
Female
Mother
Sister
Daughter
Auntie
Lesbian
Feminist

S1naidSucks · 21/04/2019 16:04

Bit ‘problematic’ fitting that on a tee shirt, WeRiseUp. 😁
