Spectator article

Just to expand on my earlier post

If you refuse to acknowledge reality (children raised by single parents have outcomes that aren't as good, men commit 98% of sexual violence, and there's no evidence that complying with feminine stereotypes changes that), rest assured that people like Rod Liddle will. And they'll put their own spin on it. Which you won't be able to counter because you're pretending this thing isn't happening.

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 16:09

It is not too black and white to say I will not share the racist, sexist, homophobic views of a man who already has a sizable platform.

That's ridiculous.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 12/04/2019 16:10

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly

Is articulating what I want to say far better !!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 16:15

stand down Guyliner, no-one's saying that you have to be a racist

that's on Tuesdays

On fridays we expose ourselves to a variety of sources and opinions, safe in the knowledge that we posses the critical capacity to sort the wheat from the chaff

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 16:41

No, on Friday we share shite.

And we do not do anything at all like discuss it intelligently or critically because to do so would be fascist.

We just share it, possibly without even reading it ourselves, because it's behind a paywall and assume because the title phrase is peak wank it must be good quality.

It's embarrassing. It's genuinely embarrassing.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 12/04/2019 16:42

Guyliner, I'm a subscriber to the Spectator. Amongst others. And yes I read the whole thing. It only took me a short while. I had to keep stopping to check my privilege of course but overall I felt it was time well spent.

Bernard, I am looking forward to tomorrow when I can abandon critical thought and spend the day laughing at disabled people.

Lolz peak wank doesn't really make for amazing conversation.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 16:50

I take it from this you refer to sharing the article rather than having any overlapping views with RL?

that's fine. no-one's asking you to share his articles (even though you did - and I'm paywalled, so I appreciated an opportunity to read more).

Reading the article and then critiquing it is good. getting cross because someone shared an article you disapprove of is, frankly, a bit weird. I'm not sure you get to pre-approve the material used here...

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 16:59

Im certain Mr Liddle and I have many things in common. Choice of breakfast cereals possibly. None of that is an issue. But if you share an article because you think it's brilliant and the thing that you share disparages women, gays, The Entire Continent of Africa people will question your values. And they will also question why it has been posted on a feminist board.

All these posters harping on about free speech and they never seem to realise it works both ways Hmm The article was a pile of crap.

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 17:01

Anyway, I'm done. At least the screenshots will show one poster said this was a steaming pile of shit.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 17:04

we have to perform mumsnetting correctly to make sure the mysterious screen shots are OK now on top of everything else?

crikey, life is getting complicated.

nettie434 · 12/04/2019 17:07

Guyliner I personally don't like it either. I've read it. Suspect it was written rather quickly and with little reference to reliable sources. I agree we should not live in an echo chamber but Rod Liddle is not a feminist ally in my opinion.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 17:10

and re-reading the snippet you posted, I would disagree that it does disparage women, gays, The Entire Continent of Africa

It talks about the gender paygap (ugh, not a thing), colonialism being responsible for Africa's ineptitude (interesting idea. I know the western fashion is for full on mea culpa regarding Africa, but I'd like to hear more about this), children doing just as well when brought up by single parents (as discussed above, RL is correct that this is wrong). He also talks about gay parents, I'm afraid I don't know the details here.

These are just ideas. They are ideas you clearly disagree with. But I don't think that means that no-one else can engage with them.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 17:10

Rod Liddle is not a feminist ally in my opinion

Oh yeah, for sure. But If I only read people whose views accorded entirely with my own, my reading list would be short!

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 17:14

It's a feminist section.

I'm going to mosey over to The Litter Box section to tell them cats are stupid. If they complain I'll just say they are narrow minded.

nettie434 · 12/04/2019 17:19

Agree BernardBlacksWineIceLolly that a reading list of people I agreed with would be very short. Happy to have read and do believe in freedom of speech but wanted to add my views to those of Guyliner. Fully accept others' right to enjoy.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 17:24

a closer analogy would be you arriving at the litter tray and criticising someone because they have posted an article by a writer who believes in docking cats tails. And telling them that because you disagree with the author's stance on this, their work may not be discussed on the board for fear of screen shots.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/04/2019 17:52

I don't find that last paragraph particularly palatable either. But what I object to is people trying to police what women can read and think about. That's why I'm being an awkward sod!

Erythronium · 12/04/2019 19:08

He's just nicked the term "Peak Trans" hasn't he? Which is funny, actually describes something that happens to people and was invented by a radical feminist. Not very original Rod.
