Pay Gap reporting undermined by GEO saying it includes "gender identity"

A Woman's Place UK have written a letter to Penny Mordaunt pointing out that "“It is important for employers to be sensitive to how an employee chooses to self identify in terms of their gender. The regulations do not define the terms ‘male’ and ‘female’ and the requirement to report gender pay should not result in employees being singled out and questioned about their gender.”"

It just seems relentless doesn't it. However often it is pointed out and even acknowledged by officials, they just ignore it every time.

The full letter from WPUK is at womansplaceuk.org/gender-pay-gap-letter-to-penny-mordaunt/

That's an excellent letter. But Mordaunt has already made clear that she buys into the delusion about women being a feeling in a man's head so she evidently won't give a toss.

Amazing that press haven't picked up on this. There's loads of coverage relating to the gender pay gap reporting deadline yet none of it mentions that we have no bloody idea on what basis employers are deciding who's male and who's female.

To be fair, I can't imagine it'd make a huge difference. Only companies with over 250 staff have to report. Trans/non-binary etc population is v small. Unlikely to be enough trans people in a workplace to skew the figures. Still important to be clear what we're measuring and why though.

I expect it might make a difference at the BBC. It was reported last year that 2% (417) of their staff are trans. Well above average based on national statistics.

So probably don't hold your breath on the beeb reporting on this.

I wonder what happens when it comes to those individuals like Phillip/Pip Bunce who spend some if the week identifying as male and some as female...

Do they go into both sets of figures or just male or just female?

It's a great letter, clear and to the point. It should apply to all situations where comparisons are made based between men and women as defined by biological sex.
