www.clitoraid.org/

Came across this charity. Does anyone know whether this is a genuine good charity to support? As in how much money goes to actively help rather than staff fannying about?

Adding clicky link for you

www.clitoraid.org

I do not know who to donate to anymore!

GoGoJo · 23/03/2019 14:32

A small amount of digging round the site and it seems to be run by a cult that believes in UFOs.

Whaat?!! I thought it looked really promising. Have slung them a tenner anyway.
Surely UFO believers can do good things too.

Yeah I know right.

As far as I can tell this man made up this batshit religion so he could a) get acolytes to pay him 10% of their salaries and b) convince women that it was their religious duty to fuck him.

It's a shame as the idea of reconstructive surgery for FGM victims is a good one but I wouldn't want to fund the crazy!

AncientLights · 23/03/2019 19:17

I know about FGM, having been a midwife in W. Africa, and the charity's intention to call their hospital "The Pleasure Hospital' is just plain warped. I have serious misgivings about them & their aims.

LassOfFyvie · 23/03/2019 22:56

AncientLights I agree.
I was a wee bit surprised that on the website and video they were putting so much emphasis on sexual pleasure and orgasm as opposed to what, for me would be more imprtant , matters such as being able to pee, menstruate and give birth without pain.

I'm sure you know this but for others see "long term effects" on this link.

www.who.int/reproductivehealth/topics/fgm/health_consequences_fgm/en/

Their sponsors/ partners are all connected with the sex industry.

One of the surgeons who works with them is Dr. Marci Bowers. Dr. Bowers is herself trans gender and has been described as a rock star of gender reassignment surgery. I suppose Dr. Bowers will have skill and personal understanding which other surgeons might not I'm still puzzled why sex and orgasm seems to be the primary aim.

Nightwitch · 24/03/2019 00:39

Urgh! Wish I'd asked here first. Gave them a tenner as well!

Does anyone know of any reputable organisations that are helping women who've suffered fgm? Or work to prevent it?

Comic Relief.

LassOfFyvie · 24/03/2019 01:15

2 interesting articles about it.

www.theguardian.com/society/2013/aug/25/surgery-for-female-genital-mutilation

broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/mgm858/raelism-clitoraid-anti-fgm-charity-pleasure-hospital

This is from the Vice article.

Critics have also suggested that by focusing on women's sexual pleasure, Clitoraid is spreading misinformation about FGM by implying that its main side effect is loss of sexual pleasure, as well as pushing a Western sex-positive agenda on women who need psychological and medical support

That's what struck me. However they are operating on women so I suppose some good is coming of it.

Sicario · 24/03/2019 13:15

I give directly to my local women's refuge. You can find a refuge near to you through google, then make contact and identify yourself with proof of who/where you are.

AuntieStella · 24/03/2019 13:36

If you want to help, girls overseas, one charity to consider is Wateraid.

Because fetching water reduces girls' education, high infant mortality rates lead women to feel pressured to have more DC they might otherwise choose, just so some might survive.

It's not promoted as a feminist charity, but if you look at who takes the burden and stress in places where there is neither clean water nor basic sanitation you will see that it's making the most enormous difference primarily to women and girls.
