www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6813503/West-End-theatre-slammed-gender-neutral-toilets.html

Gender neutral toilets with exposed urinals in West End theatre is branded a 'disgrace', with one visitor saying: 'I don't want to see genitalia unless it's my husband's!'
Soho Theatre on Dean Street in London is at centre of a row about gender neutral toilets after a theatre-goer complained the facilities were a 'f*ing disgrace'
Visitor witnessed women leaving the toilet after seeing the exposed urinals
However, others argued that 'everybody's identity should be respected'

What they need is a string of women, chatting, talking, laughing, applying lippy using a compact, asking the men, excuse me can you move over, dear, smothered giggles.

If women have to validate the identity of voyeurs, let's at least give them a taste of their own medicine.

OvaHere · 15/03/2019 15:44

I think this will upset a number of men too. I would bet most do not want to use a urinal knowing that women and young girls will be walking past.

'Everybody's identity should be respected'.

Bullshit.

Separate sex facilities are normal for a reason. Why the fuck should women 'respect' a man's choice to opt into their facilities because of their personal special identity? Why must they exempt that man from reality and lie that this is ok because of 'respect'? What exactly is the man's responsibilities in line of respecting women identifying as not believing in identity politics?

Bugger all. No one is expecting any reciprocal anything here. It isn't 'everybody is entitled to respect' it's 'women shut up and let men do what they want'.

No.

VickyEadie · 15/03/2019 15:49

I swear if I see one more fucking 'this is what you lefty feminists wanted, lol' comment I'll need to be kept away from men on a permanent basis.

AnyOldPrion · 15/03/2019 15:49

How long before they reassess and the men get their toilets back, while the women’s remains mixed sex?

AryaStarkWolf · 15/03/2019 15:51

tbf I think besides being bad for women surely most men would be annoyed about this too? I'd imagine the use of the urinals will have dropped massively since becoming unisex

XXcstatic · 15/03/2019 15:58

Hmm, I have often used the bar there, which must help to subsidise the theatre. Not any more.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/03/2019 16:01

I'll need to be kept away from men on a permanent basis.

If you find anywhere we're allowed to be without men sobbing and whining about being excluded and taking it over, please let me know ASAP.

I'm seriously now considering the advice we often share on the relationships boards when dealing with people being manipulated by narcissists: stop being the easy one to say no to.

As a group, women need to stop being nice. And accepting. And co operative with their own oppression.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 15/03/2019 16:04

The V & A museum has introduced mixed sex toilets as well. I watched two women reversing out of the toilets muttering about not sharing toilets with men the other day, (they evidently hadn't read the civil service memo about submissive behaviour on finding men in the toilets)
It really is time that women started calling this out for the perverted thing that it is. The only people that benefit from this are the creeps who enjoy exposing themselves and making women / children feel uncomfortable. This needs stating every single time.

MillicentSnitch · 15/03/2019 16:06

I went a concert at the Barbican last year, and the toilet next to the performance room turned out to be gender neutral. There were two men in there when I walked in (and out again), quite a small room too. I've never been back to The Barbican since. I just felt so uncomfortable, and actually a bit scared, & thought why would I pay money to feel this way? Thanks for the tip-off about the Soho Theatre. I'll avoid this one too, which is a shame as they have quite good 'work in progress' gigs.

anniehm · 15/03/2019 16:07

The problem is a lack of toilets in theatres full stop! A set of ladies, a set of men's (with urinals) and a set of gender neutral (no urinals) is perfect, suits all including mums with sons etc

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/03/2019 16:10

Women just self excluding quietly, while it will eventually cause annoyance and foot stamping, just makes the problem go away for the people causing it.

We need to organise and start turning up at these places, saying to managers, 'I cannot use a mixed sex space, please direct me to the single sex space'. And then talk to them about the equality act. This is not inclusive, it just relies on the excluded women not making a fuss and causing any meaningful fall out.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/03/2019 16:12

This is just sooo stupid it's almost clever. I've read that many men can 'struggle to perform' at a urinal if they feel uncomfortable, and I would think most would be uncomfortable in a urinal space with women watching. This set-up is almost guaranteed to attract complaints from men. And we all know that those are the complaints that get listened to.

Any women using these loos should talk loudly, just to remind the urinal-users that they are there. Not talk about the men, just talk. Affect their 'performance' and watch them run to management to complain!

AryaStarkWolf · 15/03/2019 16:16

This set-up is almost guaranteed to attract complaints from men. And we all know that those are the complaints that get listened to.

It's shit that we still have to wait for men to get annoyed before anything is done though. How progressive is that?

Ringdonna · 15/03/2019 16:26

Unfortunately this issue has now gone to far for it to be reversed.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/03/2019 16:41

Gender neutral toilets can be easily reversed where they have just involved sticking up a sign on existing facilities.
Specially built single cubicles are not quite so easy but while not ideal imo they are not as unacceptable as these.

HollowTalk · 15/03/2019 16:45

But what's going to happen when devout Muslim women want to go to the loo? There's no way they'd be going into a mixed toilet like that.

DoodleLab · 15/03/2019 17:26

'Everybody's identity should be respected'.

What about those people whose identity is based upon their biological sex? Funny how identities are only respected when they fit the prevailing agenda. One way "respect" as per usual.

I do wish these toilet architects would realise:

Single sex toilets = mixed gender toilets (people of any gender can use the one that aligns with their biological sex)

Single gender toilets = mixed sex toilets (people of either sex can use the one that aligns with their gender identity)

The latter is rather exclusionary for those who do not identify with having a gender at all, whereas everyone has a biological sex. Using such a room is purely about carrying out a biological function... toilets are not a validation station Angry

MillicentSnitch · 15/03/2019 17:42

You're right, Knickknack. I'll not boycott, I'll keep visiting & make a point of leaving reviews setting out any unacceptable toilet policies on TripAdvisor, Google etc.

nauticant · 15/03/2019 17:56

Everybody's identity should be respected

This sums things up very well. If you are willing to aggressively assert an identity you can get people to jump through hoops.

Set against that, someone's lived reality? Well, unless they're in one of the preferred groups then no one gives a shit.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/03/2019 17:58

'But what's going to happen when devout Muslim women want to go to the loo? '

Patriarchy doesn't care about devout Muslim women.

MhairiV · 15/03/2019 17:59

If you're making decisions not to go to certain places you have to make sure they know it, and they know why. Quietly self-excluding isn't going to make it clear what the issues are.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/03/2019 18:51

Countess Lily Madigan has plans to re educate them.

I'd quite like to see that debate with the Imams and Sharia Council, that re education session should be fascinating.

I'd also love to know Penny Mordaunt's opinion on why all those reports, inquiries, LA actions and plans around community cohesion/ preventing women from minority cultures and faiths being excluded and trapped at home are suddenly being hurled aside with cries of 'just educate them!'.
