I’m a geophysicist. My signature fieldwork uniform is bright pink.

I really liked the attitude of Mika McKinnon in this article from Vox. She wears pink for practical reasons, but at the same time is frustrated by the automatic reaction from coworkers that the use of pink clothing means that she won't be taken seriously:

Then one of my coworkers told me, “I’d never wear a pink hardhat because it would instantly undermine my credibility.” Yes, I was wearing a pink hardhat at the time. Yes, she, too, was one of the few women in this rough-and-tumble industry, although her coping method seemed to be blending in to the dominant culture while mine was aggressively pink confrontation. Yes, I wrote down the exact phrasing to never, ever forget it.

She comes across as a smart and funny woman.

I don't wear much pink at work but I have been known to buy DD pink football boots. She could then ask the boys who said football is for boys 'so, how come they make pink football boots?'

What a great article! Love it. My work boots are purple.

Bloody good article, makes far more sense on sex and gender issues than the LSE guest lecturer featured in another thread.
Mika McKinnon has a wonderful twitter feed on why scientists sometimes lick rocks.
She also writes very good articles for the Smithsonian.

Links to Mika McKinnon's Smithsonian articles, her twitter feed on licking rocks, and her current twitter feed below. She is such a good communicator on science, and we need people like her in this increasingly irrational age.

Mika’s rock licking Twitter thread is brilliant, but also weird (in a good way).
