Deaths in women's prisons

DM link: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6661953/A-fifth-inmates-die-womens-prisons-transgender.html

Pretty sure that this will have been linked somewhere on here but I couldn't find it.

The article discusses how data is not being accurately recorded by including transwomen inmate deaths with figures of women's deaths in prisons.

It has long been obvious that the apparent high risk of suicide is being used to put enormous pressure on everyone: medics, those who govern prison management systems, governments, the general public.

Because nobody is allowed to query whether compliance with these demand even alleviates the suicide risk, many people and systems are being held to ransom.

A return to basics is required. Medicine requires proper research with proper trials comparing different methods of treatment and their long term outcomes. Biological sex needs to be clearly recorded when examining statistics such as these raised here alongside info about trans status so that it can be ascertained whether changing systems even has the effect of decreasing risks.

If true, this article would suggest that moving TW to women’s prisons increases the risk of sexual assault and violence towards female prisoners, but may not alleviate the risk to the TW prisoners. That would be unconscionable.

Why are TRAs not demanding that these deaths are accurately recorded and investigated in order to protect other trans inmates?

Good quote from Nic Williams of fairplayforwomen.com

Even though it was only a short article, it mentions the points that have been discussed here time and again.

Accurate research could prevent a death in the future.

Almost a fifth of women who died in prison during the past two years had been born men, according to official figures.

The Prison and Probation Ombudsman recorded 33 female deaths in custody between 2016 and 2018. Of those, six were men who ‘self-identified’ as women.

Critics last night warned that the inclusion of transgender women risked skewing the figures and creating confusion.

Ya think?

AnyOldPrion · 11/02/2019 16:59

I think they’ve changed the headline. Now this statement is only at the bottom of the article.

“A fifth of inmates who die in women's prisons are transgender”

happydappy2 · 11/02/2019 17:33

It really is just common sense for transwomen to be legally recognised as transwomen, transmen as transmen, men as men and women as women. That is the only way forward imo.

The only people maintaining accurate details about unexplained/suspicious/unexpected deaths are Her Majesty's Coroners.

Someone needs to look at the prevalence of transgender suicide as a whole and HM Coroners are the ones that enquire into the circumstances of each death. Then we might start getting to the truth.

I’m not clear whether the 6 deaths of transwomen took place in women’s prisons or men’s prisons - does anyone know? I’d guess women’s but it’s not entirely clear to me

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 12/02/2019 09:11

I know the title says women’s prisons Blush

But the article just says a fifth of women who died in prison but it doesn’t state whether it was in the male or female estate. I can’t find the original prisons and probation ombudsman report to check

I googled the names of the transwomen to get more information about their individual circumstances. Even then, the details were scant except in the case of Jenny Swift.

Swift was one of four transwomen in a male prison. One of the transwomen was their Diversity Representative. Together, they had been planning a suicide pact as a form of protest against their treatment as male prisoners. The others decided it was a bad idea.

The article doesn't mention why Swift was in prison, but I found the information in another article. She had murdered a man by stabbing him.
