I thought 'Meat and eat' was a bit daring, in these times of Veganuary etc but they just got the spelling wrong Grin

underwhile · 28/01/2019 14:28

Maybe it's only on special occasions like this that they let women into the yoga class?

PinaGrigio · 28/01/2019 14:30

'Self-identifying women' only at the yoga, by the looks of it. Whatever the fuck that means......

GCSocScientist · 28/01/2019 14:34

Thought it looked really good, until I saw the self-identifying women only criterion.

I wonder what proportion of young women will translate:
self-identifying women = men in dresses? and will therefore not feel welcome?

Hopefully the majority will, they can then start organising their own talks about real stuff happening in the real word, for women who have not submitted to doublespeak.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 28/01/2019 14:36

not sure why yoga and zumba would be part of IWD anyway?

if they want to put on mixed sex yoga and zumba classes then that's fine, but just admit it!

beenandgoneandbackagain · 28/01/2019 14:36

Menopause?

Know your numbers about body fat percentages???

Don't they know how utterly transphobic such things are?

No doubt the protestors will be out in force. I hope they have notified their security teams.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/01/2019 14:38

It is weird that amongst generally good sounding events, they've stuck in two exercise classes and chosen yoga and Zumba. It does make you wonder what goes on the rest of the time if this has been put on specially for IWD! It's just a bog standard yoga/Zumba class. Odd.

Horsewithnoman · 28/01/2019 14:44

I'm confused a bit.

Can absolutely anyone "self identify" as a woman?

For example, someone who was born a girl who is grown up and now a woman, can she "self identify" as a woman? (And get into the yoga)

I'm not taking the piss here, this is a genuine question because I am having trouble with (some) of this new terminology that we're all suddenly expected to learn.

NC205 · 28/01/2019 14:47

I'm very confused too. I'm not a self identifying woman. I've never self identified as one, yet I get treated as one by society everyday.

I'm not brave enough to challenge this. I'm an academic on a tenuous contract (even NC'd for this post) I did just want to see what others thought though.

I would imagine the organisers intend the yoga/Zumba to be for women and male-bodied people who identify as women. They are making the unthinking assumption that women are included in the phrase "self-identify as women". When in fact many women don't self identify as women, they just are because it's an inescapable fact about them.

It does come across like the event might be intended just for those people who self identify as women (ie transgender people)!

Beerflavourednipples · 28/01/2019 14:54

What the fuck is the point of International Women's Day if any man can 'self identify' as a woman? Seriously what is their answer to this, it's batshit.

The Gender and Justice Talk is 'invitation only'. I wonder who will be invited to that....

Beerflavourednipples · 28/01/2019 14:54

This whole thing about 'self identifying' as a woman. I don't 'self identify' as a woman, I am one!

Melroses · 28/01/2019 15:01

I see you have to self-identify as a woman for the Meat thing too.

The whole thing sounds a bit dumbed down TBH

Janie143 · 28/01/2019 15:40

No Melroses you have to self identify as female and a student

AspieAndProud · 28/01/2019 16:22

If you are going to signal ‘Woke’ you might as well go the whole hog and ban yoga and Zumba as ‘cultural appropriation’ anyway.

Melroses · 28/01/2019 16:28

I can't see why they need yoga or Zumba for a IWD event anyway - you can do that any day as a woman, or self-identifying as a woman. May as well have done cheerleading or musical theatre. They could have had rock climbing or rowing or something.

I sort of thought you had to 'be' a student rather than identify as one. That would be fun.

Katispancuddly · 28/01/2019 17:02

I thought it means trans women only

No one else self identifies after all, we are identified by medical professionals at birth. To be fair, you don't even need that. It's pretty obvious.
