Centre for Women's Justice is asking women to support Nicola Stocker after her husband put his hands around her throat.

After she described what happened on Facebook, her 'husband' successfully SUED FOR DEFAMATION.

Mrs Stocker is appealing the decision at the Supreme Court and faces a massive legal bill.

Wow. That's disgusting Angry

"Strangling" is often used as a synonym for non lethal choking, in my experience, in any case.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 23/01/2019 12:47

That is horrendous. Also ridiculous: Oxford Dictionary definition of "Strangle" (given we like dictionary definitions around here!) - my italics:

"Squeeze or constrict the neck of (a person or animal), especially so as to cause death."

So this is pretty clear that it does not have to involve any intent to kill to count as strangling, hence what she put on FB was perfectly correct.

Can anything be done to him if the court agrees with her this time?

Theswaggyotter · 23/01/2019 16:03

I can’t believe that case! Another rich man gets away with abusing his wife and she is punished financially as well as physically Angry

userschmoozer · 23/01/2019 16:08

This is a really important case, because it redefines a word. Other similar words include 'stab' and 'suffocate'. They are actions, they don't mean 'kill', and they don't imply intent to kill.

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 16:13

I agree. Sadly I can't go to the court tomorrow to support but I really hope the appeal is successful.

This.

Imnobody4 · 23/01/2019 16:48

So what is the correct word ffs?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 23/01/2019 17:21

Saw it on Twitter and thought it needed airing.

Let's redefine 'strangle'.....

Good grief. There seem to be no ends that some men won't go to!
Hands round her neck leaving bruising ?? Poor woman.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 17:26

Most definitions do reference death though, it’s s tricky one. Does anyone have the citation?

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/01/2019 17:34

I wonder what word you could use to describe someone using their hands to squeeze someone's throat until they left bruising? It's a tricky one.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 23/01/2019 17:35

Throttling?

OP posts:
1hello2hello · 23/01/2019 17:40

Apparently putting your hand on someone's neck aggressively enough to leave red marks does not a 'dangerous and disreputable man' make.

The first appeal was lost when Lady Justice Sharp basically said dictionary definitions are irrelevant !??

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 17:44

When you put your hands around someone's neck with force, especially when stronger, firstly she didn't know whether she would be killed, secondly he accidentally could have killed her, thirdly he may indeed have been trying to kill her or not caring whether he did or not. It's horrible that writing "he tried to strangle me" on Facebook, when he did squeeze her throat which is very dangerous should be ruled a libel, when it is not contested that he assaulted her.

What next "he raped me" when a man sticks a bottle in a woman by force being ruled as libel because it isn't technically correct?

Threewheeler1 · 23/01/2019 17:48

This is unbelievable! Angry
What kind of hell is she going through and what the fuck is wrong with our justice system??

arranbubonicplague · 24/01/2019 12:04

No longer a shared understanding of woman.

Ditto for strangle.

I'm beginning to feel that there is no longer a shared understanding of what sex (the activity not class) typically involves.

The gulag is going to re-educate me on so many things. In fact, All The Things it seems.
