I know there are other threads on the abuse Anna Soubry has received but I’ve been trying to put my finger on what makes me so uncomfortable it. It’s not exactly because she’s a woman, but you don’t see groups of Brexiteers surrounding Ken Clarke and screaming abuse at him do you? The speaker even called it out as particularly targeting women. Jo cox was a victim of male violence in this context. I’m not sure I have a point but I think the way online forums encourage this kind of dehumanisation has a particular effect on women that’s spilling over into the real world.

Agree, I think she is receiving this level of abuse because she is female. It's horrible.

Tbf JRM and BoJo have had a fair amount of abuse thrown at them, including going to JRM home.

I just watched the bbc clip on the app and thought exactly the same.

All men shouting at one woman.

I'm not sure I'd see it being done to a man.

And certainly not a bunch of women shouting at a man or woman for that matter.

I think the difference is that he is clearly having a fabulous time being In The Right. While women - you know, the class of people who are actually vulnerable - find it threatening and silencing.

I’m personally all for freedom of speech and robust public debate, but somehow the lack of recognition that woman might have particular fears at being surrounded by a group of angry men bothers me, even though it would of course be frightening for anyone.

And that makes me sound like I’m anti-equality which I’m not. I’m just very confused!
