Validation, validation, validation.

www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2018/12/21/transgender-students-win-apology-told-use-gender-neutral-toilets/

“The security guard said the gender neutral toilets are available. I said ‘Well, I don’t identify as gender neutral, I identify as a man”

Police and childcare, they've both chosen career paths where they would have power over others. I'm sure they'll be busy re-educating in both their professions.

Er, so precisely who are the gender neutral toilets for? What percentage of the population identifies as 'gender neutral'? Or have the disabled toilets been colonised for woke points? As the OP said, this is all about validation.

and haven't the Nordic countries (who supposedly lead the world in women's rights) been using unisex changing rooms/toilets for years now?

No. I live in Sweden. Changing rooms are open plan here (which I hate) but are all single sex. I’ve never seen a mixed sex change anywhere.

Everything is open plan - changing and showers and like most countries you have to shower naked before using the pool.

It’s a myth that Nordic/Scandinavian societies are all mixed sex everything.

Cos it's not about wanting to be the opposite sex and issues over gender stereotypes.

It's about power.

Gender neutral spaces don't produce that.
