Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Stereotyping, pageants etc - let them get on with it?

This is only slightly tongue in cheek. but there has been a lot of coverage over the last few days of transwomen in beauty pageants and how they often seem to be "better" women than the rest of us.

Well - why not just let them get on with it? They can visit a salon weekly to have their hair and nails done, watch their diet 24/7, exercise to get that flat stomach and rounded bum, wear truckloads of makeup, pick out ridiculous heels and basically meet all of the ideals that women have been trying to attend to for years.

let them be stereotypical women and men can enjoy that if they want.

And we can get on with being whatever the hell we want. We can just step away from all of those expectations and let transwomen have them.

it doesn't help with the child rearing part of being a woman - but it's a start.

I am being lighthearted... but anyone else seen a good side of men wanting to be women?

I completely agree.
Let them have waxing, needles, scalpels, dyes, nips, tucks, plucks, heels, shapewear, diets, gyms, facial paint, self-consciousness, second-guessing choices, impostor syndrome, time-consuming beauty regimes, restriction, self-denial, objectification, dehumanisation, ridicule, stress...

Let them have the male gaze all to themselves.

Sounds fine to me. Way forward Smile

rememberatime · 19/12/2018 17:10

The thing is that all of the preening has been used to control us. Will that work for transwomen?

I don't think most men like women who they can't control.

I do like the idea of having a feminine proxy who can do the shit stuff for us. Like modelling clothes, posing on billboards - oh and porn and prostitution.

There was someone who did a playboy centrefold. Interesting.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2018 17:15

I don't think most men like women who they can't control.

I don't agree that applies to 'most men' .... but, very possibly most men of the type who like objectified images of women, porn etc.

rememberatime · 19/12/2018 17:23

Errol - I suppose I can qualify that statement by saying "most men I have come across".

OP this has crossed my mind too, I think its a great idea 👍🏽
I’d like to add Good Girl perfume to the list and the gender pay gap. They’re especially welcome to porn and prostitution. If they object we can tell them to stop being such prudes and be empowered instead.

FloralBunting · 19/12/2018 18:45

I am totally for pageants, based entirely on superficial and sexist notions of what a woman is, being handed over to an entire troupe of transwomen. Have at it, ladies.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 19/12/2018 18:48

Yep, I’m happy for the male gaze to scrutinise other men and to leave women out of it.

NewWomensMovement · 19/12/2018 18:57

Yup. Take the catcalls and the abuse for not measuring up, the harassment and the scary abuse for not 'putting out' too!

Take it all!

rememberatime · 19/12/2018 19:30

Yay! I guess though that eventually they will want feminism too - once they realise how much it is needed.

VovoBickie · 19/12/2018 20:06

Honestly not a diss I would be happy with this. No problems if 100% participants are TW next year.

HamiltonCork · 19/12/2018 20:13

If be up for that.

NewWomensMovement · 19/12/2018 20:18

I wonder if the criteria of attractiveness would start to change.

Shorter, plumper-thighed, less cheek-bony, etc.

Currently the standard for female attractiveness looks a fuck lot more like a male with silicone tits than like any women I know or meet.

rememberatime · 19/12/2018 20:27

NewWomen - that's a very good point. Although I am pretty sure that men find regular women with soft bits very attractive - it is just advertisers who don't.

But if transwomen are held up as the ideal, us regular women won't feel the need to compete. We know we can't. We can just be ourselves.

Maybe the trans activists have it right all along.

If everyone in a beauty pageant is trans - then it becomes a bit of an oddity. That's the only reason this current one is so interesting to people - so people can gawp at the transwoman. I would be horrified and offended by that if I was trans. but they seems to find it brave and validating.

FloralBunting · 19/12/2018 20:58

But that's the essence of the farce to me. The empty charade of a pageant, presenting women in a parade to be judged on their 'Beauty', most of which is either genetic luck to be the current society understanding of physical attractiveness, or a shed load of cosmetic surgeries, plus a huge bucket of slap. None of it is real. It's a total lie. So a transwoman does well in that arena? Of course they do, because the whole notion of 'woman' being presented is an artifice, so you could conceivably wheel on a man-made android and have it win. A male bodied person doing it is just par for the course in fantasyland.

BlackForestCake · 19/12/2018 23:29

Of course, the missing feature is the “male gaze” because hardly any men would actually be interested in watching such a pageant.

WallyTheWasher · 19/12/2018 23:49

I agree. I was saying similar to a friend re the TW in Miss Universe...they’re welcome to all of that sexist claptrap. I certainly won’t fight them for it

BettyDuMonde · 20/12/2018 01:15

Now I’m getting vivid flashbacks of a TV show called ‘The Swan’.

It’s just about the worst thing I have ever seen, but I can imagine a trans version being popular with contestants (all that free cosmetic surgery)...

Julie Bindel weighs in, concluding:
I can see why the idea of a beauty pageant is attractive to some trans woman. After all, for many men, the motivation to transition is the opportunity to play out a sexual fantasy about womanhood, which has nothing to do with actual womanhood for those of us born female. This type of parody is akin to blackface.

Caitlyn Jenner, the Trump-supporting former athlete who was once voted ‘woman of the year’ by Glamour Magazine praised Ponce this week for, for ‘breaking barriers and making progress in her community’. In the meantime, feminists still strive for progress by naming beauty competitions as sexist, regressive bullshit.

Why should trans women make us like beauty pageants?

MsBeaujangles · 20/12/2018 10:35

I don't see the need for pageants to be single sex (i don't actually see the need for pageants Grin) so it is one of those things that I think can be trans inclusive.
There are many aspects of life where one's sex is irrelevant to the context, I'd love it if objectifying people was eradicated altogether, but failing that, it was not limited to females.

slappinthebass · 20/12/2018 10:45

I'm more than happy with men doing that. I'm not happy with society claiming they MUST be a woman if they enjoy doing that.

13thWarriorWitch · 20/12/2018 17:49

This. EXACTLY this.
