Trigger. Honour killing: Banaz Mahmood would've been 32 today

I just wanted to remember her really.

5 times she went to police to ask for help and to say she might be killed. All because she left her husband--who raped and abused her.

Her father tried to kill her. He even made her bring the suitcase into which he planned to stuff her body.

Her brother tried to kill her sister, who fled and now lives in hiding.

Her father and uncle employed 3 cousins to torture, rape, sodomise and strangle Banaz in her family home. They stuffed her body in a suitcase and buried her in a backgarden.

The murderers fled to Iran. Detective Caroline Goode would not give up and eventually they were all caught.

Sadly once justice was done, her love Rahmat hung himself.

Honour killing, violence and forced marriage is real and happening.

See sharan.org.uk/ for ways to help.

Please watch this documentary but be aware it is hard watching

RIP Banaz.

SlowlyShrinking · 16/12/2018 20:07

My god such depravity. RIP Banaz

Mumfun · 16/12/2018 20:43

I never forget Banaz . I remember her always. I did not know that her love died.

I can only hope that she and he are now at peace in a better place.

Squall · 16/12/2018 21:20

RIP Banaz Flowers

SunsetBeetch · 16/12/2018 21:24

Horrifying and tragic. RIP Banaz.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 16/12/2018 21:45

Thanks for highlighting. She would have been 33 btw.

Eloisedublin123 · 16/12/2018 21:53

Just watched the film 🤕

happydappy2 · 16/12/2018 22:07

Thank you for sharing this desperately sad story-she is remembered. Words fail me.

CrazyToast · 18/12/2018 20:36

@Funkyfunkybeat12 The police detective who found her and caught all her killers and saw her buried said 32 on twitter which prompted by post. What made you think 33? Caroline Goode is and was very invested in Banaz so I would think she would know.

Please don’t use the term ‘honour’. How can they think there is any honour in torturing, raping and murdering your own child?

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 18/12/2018 20:50

CrazyToast she was born 16 December 1985 and was aged 20 at the time of her death in January 2006. The detective obviously got it wrong. I was just clarifying it. All the newspaper reports at the time reported her as being 20 in January 2006. No offence intended.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 18/12/2018 21:16

Flowers for Banaz. No words.

CrazyToast · 18/12/2018 22:11

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD That isnt my term. It is what these killings are called. It is what the charities and police fight.

CrazyToast · 18/12/2018 22:21

@funkyfunkybeat12 Nope 1986 died 2006. Honestly your comment has really annoyed me. Caroline would know. She spend years of her life to find Banaz and bring her killers to justice. I've seen some internet sites say 1985 but it was 86. But even if Caroline was wrong and therefore I was wrong, why do you think making that correction was appropriate or ok? We're talking about her rape and murder. Not some 'facts one upmanship'. If you knew Banaz then fine but if not, what is your motivation?

How heartbreaking Sad

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/12/2018 22:25

Oh I know - I was t having a pop. The term just sets my teeth on edge. It almost legitimises it or excuses it as if they don’t know any better.

CrazyToast · 18/12/2018 22:28

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD Yeah I get that. It is so shit.

What a terribly sad case. How awful for this poor woman.

OP, I don’t think the pp meant any offence in debating her age. People sometimes get things wrong - ie you’ve spelt her last name wrong in your OP.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 18/12/2018 22:34

No. She turned 20 on 16 December 2005 and died a few weeks later in January 2006 aged 20. If she was born in December 1986, she would have been 19 when she died. As I said, I didn't mean any offence- I just wanted to correct the record and at the time I did not know that you were quoting from Caroline's tweet.

CrazyToast · 18/12/2018 22:37

@Shirleyphallus Me spelling her name wrong isnt the same as derailing a thread about a murdered girl with a pedantic comment (like you just did too btw).

The point here is Banaz. Not snide digs about spelling. Not pedantic criticism of the woman who spent years of her life pursing justice for a murdered girl. I am thoroughly disgusted by these comments tbh.
The point is Banaz. If you haven't got a decent point to make, dont make it.

OP posts:
Funkyfunkybeat12 · 18/12/2018 22:38

I am really sorry. I did not wish to derail the thread. I don't know what I can do beyond apologise- there was no offence intended.

Shirleyphallus · 18/12/2018 22:40

We are all agreeing it is an awful case and this woman should be remembered

Please don’t take out your anger on other people interested in the case. You can’t decide what people do and don’t post on threads.

Shirleyphallus · 18/12/2018 22:42

I actually think it’s much more disrespectful to spell her name wrong than to question her age.
