Councillor everyday sexism - shall I complain?

I attended a council meeting yesterday when the chair thanked everyone who made a contribution, thanking each woman by her first name, and every man as Mr (or Cllr). Five men, five women. Other attendees' lack of interest me pointing this out has got me wondering whether I should ignore it. This wouldn't happen in my workplace. It really jarred with me and I thought it would jar with others. Your thoughts, please.

Were the 5 women also Cllrs?

Sorry, I confused the issue by mentioning cllrs. None of the 10 were councillors. He used that title later

I would complain.

I have started to get annoyed with people using my first name in formal situations. It shows over familiarity and a lack of respect. Especially if women are singled out for it.

LikeDust · 07/12/2018 11:31

Either don't call the men by title or call the women Ms if you don't know their marital or academic/peerage status.

VickyEadie · 07/12/2018 11:31

Definitely complain. I cannot be doing with people - especially men - assuming they can use my first name and then witnessing them offering what is clearly a greater degree of courtesy to men.

My first name if mine to offer, not theirs to take.

LassWiADelicateAir · 07/12/2018 11:31

I think you should point it out. I agree with LikeDust.

I've seen it when introducing a panel of ALL doctors. So here we have Dr Jones, Dr Smith..and Nancy.

Look up the Council's code of conduct for councillors, assuming the Chair was a councillor? It will probably have a line about treating others with respect.

Beamur · 07/12/2018 12:18

Yup. Point it out.
