If ‘sex is socially constructed’....

...then babies come into existence through social construction.
...then there is no need for IVF services. Sex and babies come from social construction.
....then abortions are not real.
.....then maybe we are just social constructions ourselves and are plugged into the matrix.....
....please add your next logical argument built on ‘sex is socially constructed’

So fed up beyond words the obvious nonsense being sprouted.

Sex is socially constructed; no one tell the animals.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 19/11/2018 16:21

If sex were socially constructed then it would vary within societies and from country to country.

I am pretty sure, however, that men in Khazakhstan are pretty much physically the same as men in Bolivia. And that women in Botswana are pretty much physically the same as those in Iceland.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2018 16:23

If sex is 'socially constructed', how the heck do non-social animals manage to reproduce?

If sex is 'socially constructed' how does my dog unerringly know not only dog from bitch but also man from woman?

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/11/2018 16:23

You’re entirely misconstruing this, I think on purpose. I agree that sex is biology not socially constructed, but you’re talking about the act of sexual intercourse, which clearly aren’t the same thing.

MrsTerryPratcett · 19/11/2018 16:23

It's all because people don't understand the difference between sex and gender. Mainly because of prudishness. People say gender when they mean sex.

I just want to shout HOW ARE BABIES MADE? But that's not very constructive.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/11/2018 16:24

She’s not talking about shagging. She means sex. As in ‘Bob is Male. Sandra is Female.’

directsunlight · 19/11/2018 16:26

The obfuscation is deliberate - a means to and end. The end? Obliterate the word 'sex' from the Equality Act and legalese in general, so women cannot fight for single sex provision anymore.

Because when everyone is a woman, no one will be.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 16:26

Not misconstruing, cauliflower, just heard it on Radio 4 plus came across it multiple times over last few weeks.

If sex is socially constructed, on what basis was I allocated as female?

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2018 16:29

Neither meaning of 'sex' (the attribute or the action) is 'socially constructed'. There may be social elements to the details of the latter but the root is biology.

MrsTerryPratcett · 19/11/2018 16:29

I just think it would be nice to have a word for the people who gestate young, could gestate young, have gestated young, are discriminated against because they might gestate young. I feel like it would be useful to have a word for that...

MIdgebabe · 19/11/2018 16:30

Mrs...how about the word...um..man?

pancaketosser · 19/11/2018 16:31

If sex is socially constructed, how do dairy farms not shut down? And what the fuck is in the milk I put in my coffee?

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 16:32

If sex is socially constructed, on what basis was I allocated as female?

It was that pink dress you wore upon your arrival into this world.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 16:35

Tossed, the cows must have been made to lactate to make them feelz better.

Yes you’re misconstruing. She was talking on WH about sex - the binary of male and female as biological fact - as being socially constructed, not sexual intercourse

MrsTerryPratcett · 19/11/2018 16:50

the binary of male and female as biological fact

But that's inextricably linked to sexual intercourse. The reason for two sexes is sexual reproduction. That's how the evolution of our species works.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 17:15

Cauliflower. Whether you th8nk i’m deliberately misconstrue is or not, and I can tell you that s not my intent.....my understanding is that The concept of ‘sex’ ‘the binary of male and female’ is socially constructed in so far as all concepts are conveyed through language which is socially constructed. Just because the concept is socially constructed through language doesn’t mean the concept is not real and based on biological fact.

Some other philosopher could probably come along and explain it better than I can.

Your dog obviously isn’t a Yorkshire terrier.

They’ll hump anything.

Badstyley · 19/11/2018 17:20

If sex is a social construct then why are all these males identifying as women, then insisting lesbians must sleep with them? Wouldn’t they want to sleep with a range of people instead of people of a specific sex,and especially a subset of people of that specific sex? It seems like an awfully specific interest if sex is indeed a social construct.

How can heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality exist at all if sex is a social construct? Wouldn’t we just fancy whoever we liked? There wouldn’t be any need for descriptors of sexuality whatsoever.

Ereshkigal · 19/11/2018 17:36

Yes you’re misconstruing. She was talking on WH about sex - the binary of male and female as biological fact - as being socially constructed, not sexual intercourse

Sex is all about your reproductive role out of the two sexes. There are only two types of gamete, sperm and ova. No one is misconstruing anything.

Biologifemini · 19/11/2018 17:40

I never remember this amount of debate regarding sex, gametes and chromosomes during lectures at uni.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 18:19

That’s because established biological facts are for building upon to further knowledge. You go backwards if you start undermining science and reality.

It’s like Newton s laws are taught and built upon to allow space travel etc.. Is gravity up for debate? What would happen if we start denying gravity as real.

I can’t actually believe that Alice Dreger has tweeted that there are more than two Sexes 😳
Shoot me now.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/11/2018 18:59

This 'sex is a social construct' stuff doesn't work on a parenting website. (Well, it doesn't work anywhere but it really doesn't work here).
