BBC 100 Women 2018. You cant now have a list without a TW

Mumfun · 19/11/2018 11:01

Feels like these days you can not have a list of womenwithout the obligatory Transwoman on it : www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-46225037

Also why include this woman? 40) Jessica Hayes, 41 - Teacher, US.

Jessica is a consecrated virgin - vowing perpetual virginity as a bride of Christ - who teaches high-school theology classes and serves as a vocational adviser.

Bizarre

Of course there are several very interesting women who deserve their achievements being highlighted.

There are some very weird nominations there - also someone who is there because she is an altruistic surrogate mother. That slightly sets my alarm bells ringing.

There are so many women out in the world doing big things not on the list.

gendercritter · 19/11/2018 11:17
Confused
FloralBunting · 19/11/2018 11:17

I'm sorry, why do you think this is a transwoman?

SlowlyShrinking · 19/11/2018 11:22

Number 47 is a tw, Floral. The op refers to 2 different people

Mumfun · 19/11/2018 11:23

The transwoman is another person on the list who I chose not to pick out . Number 40) is not a TW as far as I know

This isn’t new. I was in the first 2013 cohort. With Paris Lees.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/11/2018 11:32

TRAs aren't going to be happy about the inclusion of Robin Morgan.

FloralBunting · 19/11/2018 11:32

Oh, I see. Well, apart from being mildly Hmm at including someone who isn't a woman on the list, and that only very mildly because we're not talking about any significant advantage for being on the list, I'm not sure I have an issue with this.

The list is inspiring or influential women. That's a very broad category. You're not going to find every influential woman inspiring, and you not going to be personally inspired by every single woman that other women find inspiring. I find a small American Italian nun who was extremely acerbic, traditional and funny inspiring and I know many others do too, but I also know that lots of other women wouldnt like her at all.

I'm not sure I understand the problem.

Serfisafleur · 19/11/2018 11:34

Floral I assume the problem is that the list of women includes someone who isn't a woman...

FloralBunting · 19/11/2018 11:38

Well, yes, that's what the title indicates, but the post references a woman who is not a transwoman and complains about her inclusion.

woopdedoodle · 19/11/2018 12:08

And number 28, who sounds a top notch bloke. It must be hard being LGBT in Egypt. But not a woman.

Grauniad · 19/11/2018 12:27

?

Reading that list, 47 is a partner of a transwoman rather than being a transwoman.

Did you mean someone else?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 13:08

I think OP is wondering why a consecrated virgin who teaches theology should be included at all! There are, after all, so many other women in the world who have dome some truly remarkable things this year!

StarsAndMoonlight · 19/11/2018 13:09

The post says "also". It's quite clear that the OP is making points about 2 separate people.

GlacindaTheTroll · 19/11/2018 13:21

I'm just really disappointed that Nicky Spinks isn't on it.

51 yo farmer sets a fell running world record, with a double Ramsay. She kept running through breast cancer treatment.

FloralBunting · 19/11/2018 13:54

Yes, I understood the reason why the OP wasn't happy about the inclusion of the woman mentioned. I just thought it was an odd and slightly misleading complaint when the issue raised by the title is males included in a list of inspiring or influential women.

The title complaint, I can understand. The inclusion of women who the OP thinks are inconsequential, I understand somewhat less.

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/11/2018 14:03

news.abs-cbn.com/life/08/24/16/how-joey-mead-discovered-angelina-mead-king

47 is married to someone who as far as I can make out likes to cross dress.

I Can't see a TW on the list?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 14:09

Maybe OP thought the beard on Shrouk El-Attar (no.28) was pertinent. Except it isn't...so no, I can't see yet!

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/11/2018 14:11

I love 28. She definitely deserves a place.

She says she's queer but really she's gender non conforming and a lesbian.

woopdedoodle · 19/11/2018 14:14

My bad, beard blindness.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 14:14

Ah! Ophelia Pastrana - no. 72

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 14:16

woopdedoodle the woman with the beard is a woman! The beard is part of her protest, her comedy belly dancing, protesting act! She is gay...

NotTerfNorCis · 19/11/2018 14:18

The TW is a model. What criteria are the top 100 women judged by, again?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 14:20

I had forgotten about Shaparak Shajarizadeh and the White Wednesday campaign!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/11/2018 14:22

No idea, NotTerf Some of them are really interesting and I would like to learn more about them and the things they have done. So the list is of some use...

... which makes the inclusion of some of them even more odd!
