More text from an email below:

"Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked each year on 20 November. It is a day on which we celebrate our trans staff and students, but also remember those affected by violence against the trans community in the UK and beyond, particularly over the last year. We will mark the day by a short ceremony at 1pm as follows.

Flag-raising ceremony and speeches

Monday 20 November, 1.00pm - 1.40pm, flagpole between Whiteknights House and the Library.

This event is hosted by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Van de Noort, by Nozomi Tolworthy the RUSU Diversity Officer, and by Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Simon Chandler-Wilde. It will feature short speeches from the Acting VC on behalf of the University, and from the trans community, including guest speaker Amber Edwards, Chair of the Oracle Pride Employee Network, Oracle. Representatives of RUSU and our LGBT+ Staff Network will read out the names of some of those worldwide who have suffered death from transphobic violence in the last year.

All staff and students are welcome to join us to mark this occasion and pay our respects."

Even my terribly woke DH forwarded this onto me with a raised eyebrow and a "Really?"

Hmm

Any others going on at your local universities?

Dear lord, what fresh self indulgent narcissistic crap is this from the trans activists? Two actual women a week are murdered in Britain, usually by their partners, and we don’t have flags at half mast for any of them!
Nobody gives a shit about real women being attacked, discriminated against and murdered, but we have to have a special day for the “brave and stunning” brigade. Count me out.

Avegemitesandwich · 14/11/2018 15:04

If people want to organise and have a transgender day of remembrance then that is up to them. It's the twisting of stats about murders and suicides that I object to, but a 'day of remembrance' well, I can't get worked up about it.

I wonder if Reading University have a 'Women's Day of Remembrance' where the two women a week murdered by their partner of ex are remembered? (Genuine question, I don't know!)

Avegemitesandwich · 14/11/2018 15:05

Oh I cross posted with,Babdoc about the murdered women.

UpstartCrow · 14/11/2018 15:12

Its perfectly reasonable, as long as they do the same for the other groups who suffer discrimination and violence.

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/11/2018 15:16

I would ask when all the other days of remembrance are, as you are concerned you might have missed the notifications about them.

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/11/2018 15:18

Does the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion's brief extend to cover women, or is there a separate post for that? Maybe you could contact whoever is relevant and lobby for a Women's day of remembrance to remember all female victims of male violence.

RiverTam · 14/11/2018 15:19

who exactly are they remembering with such a fandango, given that very few trans people are victims, or murder especially, in this country?

But the real point is that I very much doubt they are doing this for women, who are murdered and are victims of violence in droves, comparatively speaking, both in the UK and globally.

liquidrevolution · 14/11/2018 15:22

Christ. Am local so tempted to head up there and see what the turn out is like.

namechangeninetynine · 14/11/2018 15:24

Do they mean remember those killed?

Or remember those who've experienced violence?

Or both

And is remembering those who've been harmed by literal violence also covered if so?

newdocket · 14/11/2018 15:26

Yes, we have one here. Just been to an incredibly depressing talk about trans rights, featuring zero critical thinking and strong railing against and name-calling of anyone who is critical. Apparently anyone who questions it is in cahoots with far right christian movements.

Hoppinggreen · 14/11/2018 15:29

Funny how they are actual women the same as those of us born as women and marking them as “other” is wrong, hateful and violent
Until they want to be special

RiverTam · 14/11/2018 15:35

why do TRAs and their allies think that we're living in the Americas???

FloralBunting · 14/11/2018 15:42

Oh fgs, could we not do another one of these, please? I mean yes, people can post what they like, and it's really annoying that VAWG gets shunted so far down the priority list, but I genuinely don't have an issue with trans people having their own moments and every time this kind of post pops up it follows the same damned script.

This is just a gift for all the prim finger pointers to come in and say they knew we were such evil harpies all along blah blah blah. Let's actually post lots on the oppression of women and girls without reference to trans anything unless it is actually part of that overall oppression.

I'm sick and tired of AWAs centering everyone but women and girls in feminism. Let's not bloody assist them. And this is not a 'be nice' exhortation. This is a 'Stop wasting your energy and ignore what can be safely ignored'.

ContessaHallelujahSparklehorse · 14/11/2018 17:13

I've asked DH to gently prod as to all the other days of remembrance, but he assures me that if he does he will be a) suspended and b) fired.

I have no problem with a day of remembrance for transpeople as long as they also have days to remember the victims of domestic violence, racism, homophobia and hatred of the disabled?

noeffingidea · 15/11/2018 10:43

Let them get on with it, as long as they don't expect everyone to participate, is what I say. Everyone should be free to opt out of these ocassions if they want to.

newtlover · 15/11/2018 11:15

I'd be writing back saying it would be a fitting part of the ceremony if the names of all TG killed because they were TG in the past year was read out.

LozzaKing reported

namechangeninetynine · 15/11/2018 12:00

I've just seen somewhere claiming a figure of 369 people

If that's true, it's horrific

Is it true? Anyone know?

littlbrowndog · 15/11/2018 12:04

Oh me to a bit
What a piece of work that lozza king is

ABitCrapper · 15/11/2018 12:05

Quite. I think it would be worth Searching for screenshots of their posts on Twitter. What's the betting that they are there somewhere?

thereallochnessmonster · 15/11/2018 12:09
