Sports Minister Ally resigns when Govt capitulates to Lobbyists

Tracey Crouch MP resigned when the Govt appeased the Gambling lobby by delaying a restriction on fixed bets machines. Her resignation is significant for two reasons, at least.

  1. It is unusual for a Minister, let alone a Conservative Minister, to shine a light on the influence of lobbyists on government (in)action. We know it goes on, and how it damages the public interest when government are in thrall to the Lobby - eg Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence, Press for Change's role in the reform of the Gendered Recognition Act.
  1. Tracey Crouch is being described as the best Sports Minister in living memory, particularly for her work in the field of sport for women and girls. I don't know if anyone visited her or wrote to her during the GRA consultation, but it seems unlikely that she would accept male-bodied individuals intruding in and damaging Women's Sport.

She sounds like a politician that could teach her colleagues a thing or two about putting the public interest before corporate profits, and championing the interests of women and girls where she can.

I don't know much (well anything to be honest) about her but she sounds like a decent person who has made a decision on a matter of principle rather than for personal gain.

One upside for me of this whole self ID business is that I've started trying to evaluate politicians on their behaviour rather than on their party colours.

James Kirkup has written about her in his Spectator blog but I can't read most of it as I'm not a subscriber (something I will have to rectify). twitter.com/spectator/status/1058295510300286976
