Just saw this on Twitter.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0000xqk

Looks like they are back to TWAW after a brief nod to the GC side.

Apparently, non-binary and uses "they" But is, I think, a woman who has had children and relationships with men and women.

So, a bisexual adult human female.

"Jill Soloway, creator of the drama series, Transparent, talks to Jane about the inspiration behind the award-winning show, her growing understanding of trans issues and her own decision to identify as non-binary."

TrashyTerf · 31/10/2018 23:32

I don't have so Maury of a problem with this, hey should show both sides of the argument tbf.

However, they need to balance his with a different segment on GC views.

LassWiADelicateAir · 31/10/2018 23:58

Jill Soloway, creator of the drama series, Transparent

Oh her- she had a long Guardian weekend article about her recently. She takes rampaging narcissism to unprecedented heights. This is the twit who couldn't book a restaurant on Valentine's day until she came out as non-binary (or a man, I can't remember which and don't care)

I'm listening to this now.

She (they?) is so profoundly illogical.

AbsintheFriends · 01/11/2018 10:20

I heard a bit of it and switched off. Never done that before - usually I ride out the stupidity, but today I just feel done with it. It's unintelligent narcissism and doesn't warrant the tiniest amount of headspace.

R0wantrees · 01/11/2018 10:21

I've also just realised that if we are to use 'they' pronoun for an individual in compliance with their 'preferred pronoun' we must also acknowledge that they is singular not plural.

I think I may have (unsurprisingly) in the past said in compliance with MN rules rather than grammar rules of other Non-Binary notables, 'they are' plural when it should be 'they is' (singular).

Apologies.

Gncq · 01/11/2018 10:28

They is reaching new heights of narcissism.

MsBeaujangles · 01/11/2018 10:47

Interesting Abs, I also switched the radio off having not done that before. It was not interesting or engaging.
I often see comments under newspaper articles expressing frustration about the column inches being used to cover trans issues. Today is the first time I had such a thought. The item seemed so tokenistic, but maybe that was because I listen to so little of it!

PurpleOva · 01/11/2018 11:00

I don't normally listen to Women's hour, but have a couple of times since joining here.... to be honest I think Women's hour itself is terribly gendered, always seems to be talking about the socialization that puts women into boxes and seems like it's filled with self fulfilling negative consequences for women.

"Men take 3 minutes to get ready to go out, where it can take women 45 minutes or more" paraphrasing, but geez louise, taking a long time to get ready is up to YOU. Don't do it if you don't want to. Nobody has a gun to your head to layer on the make up just because you are female.

Not sure I will be listening to Women's hour again, I think my life is better off without it!

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 01/11/2018 11:26

I enjoyed the "She uses the pronoun 'They'" moment.

R0wantrees · 01/11/2018 11:30

I enjoyed the "She uses the pronoun 'They'" moment.

Indeed, more accurate might be she asks / requires (?) others to use the pronoun 'they' when referring to her?

FloralBunting · 01/11/2018 11:35

I have got to the stage now with pronouns that I just hear my mother saying "Who's 'she'? The cat's mother?"

Ridiculous quota for the century already exceeded.

AbsintheFriends · 01/11/2018 13:45

MsBeaujangles perhaps this is the next stage, after peak trans. Trans terminal?

I do actually feel like things have shifted since the end of the consultation, in my mind at least. Before then it felt important to be on top of it all, but now I honestly think that people - the wider population, just going about their lives - will not let such nonsense actually take hold. The 'they is' point is a good example of something that will just make people roll their eyes.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/11/2018 13:58

I don't usually listen to WH but I'm having a week off doing nothing. She has a very fixed and restrictive idea of what being a woman is. And no concept of what having a personality and personal preferences are. And so smug- she wasn't happy at the suggestion that actually we're all non-binary to some extent.

Electron1 · 01/11/2018 14:40

Why does not liking dressing up for events turn into a non binary identity? She just sounds menopausal. I agree Jill, give it all up, no-one cares, you are invisible now!

I gave up wearing make up 6 years ago and no one noticed.

ARosebyAnyOtherNameChange · 01/11/2018 14:43

Well, having your dad transition must mess with the head. I think declaring yourself non-binary is probably the closest most of us could get to keeping a foot in both camps.

But what's with the idea that only a transgender actor could portray a transgender character? Why doesn't it then follow that only a woman can be a woman?

FrigideBarjot · 01/11/2018 14:44

Not sure if this is the same programme, but I was listening to R2 and there was a hook up with Jane Garvey as they were all broadcasting from the London Eye. I thought she was very rude to Ken Bruce when talking about Pop MASTER making digs about changing the name to something more appropriate. It really wasn't the time or place imo, Ken just diplomatically ignored it.

flashbac · 01/11/2018 15:32

I listened to this and swore at the radio. FFS! It's society that makes women feel like failures. The answer is to change society not flipping gender.
