Brendan O'Neill's latest Spiked article: Why isn’t transgenderism ‘cultural appropriation’?

This will no doubt ruffle a few feathers...

Great piece by Mr O'Neill. I've often wondered the same.

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 23:32

It is objectification for sure.

theOtherPamAyres · 24/10/2018 23:57

That was a good read, Brendan. I liked the contrast between the ring-fencing of things cultural and racial, and the celebration of men who appropriate womanhood - fixed and fluid.

hipsterfun · 25/10/2018 02:18

Apologies are to the permanently offended as babies are to the Canaanite god of Moloch: things they devour in order to become more powerful and arrogant.

That tickled me.

Now I must go to bed. Look at the time, ffs!

TimeLady · 25/10/2018 07:51

Cleverly argued. Thanks, Brendan.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 25/10/2018 08:43

Fabulous and so clear.

Popchyk · 25/10/2018 08:49

"The end result of both of these woke approaches is to promote a peculiarly conservative view of the world."

Bang on. Wish he'd expressly talked about how homophobic the transgender industry is.

Rumbledore · 25/10/2018 08:54

Didn’t a certain doctor claim in a Sky News interview that women had appropriated the word woman Hmm

Popchyk · 25/10/2018 08:55

Yes, the certain doctor was raging about it.

Because the word woman belongs to men, clearly.

hackmum · 25/10/2018 09:11

That's a brilliant piece by Brendan. I'm almost starting to like the man.

OvaHere · 25/10/2018 09:32

Bang on. Wish he'd expressly talked about how homophobic the transgender industry is.

This is a good piece that talks about it.

I don't know really. Drag rather than transgenderism could be argued to be cultural appropriation. At its extremes TG goes far beyond cultural appropriation as it seeks to redefine what a woman is rather than borrow from it.

Also I am not convinced by these cultural appropriation rows. This vogue one is so far from CA that I suspect russian trolls.

MsVanillaRoseAuntof7 · 26/10/2018 11:22

Ah, yes, Brendan O'Neill the famous contrarian. And what do you make of his view that victims of historical sexual abuse should just stfu? And that it's okay for working class people to yell racist things at football matches?

We have so few male allies that we should accept anyone who sees the attack on women for what it is. We will never agree with everyone in the whole world on everything, so we can't afford to ditch and alienate those who are on our side in the important things.

OldCrone · 26/10/2018 11:50

MsVanilla
So he's said some things that I don't agree with, but with respect to this article, what point are you trying to make?

JamPasty · 26/10/2018 12:31

OvaHere - that article is excellent, thank you for sharing it!
