Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Handmaiden bingo

Am friends with an ex-colleague on FB who posted a link to the Stonewall GRA consultation campaign. I foolishly clicked on the comments, and it's Handmaiden Bingo.

Someone - who appears to be a fully functioning adult in her 30s - has actually posted "my feminism will be intersectional or it will be bullshit". I didn't think anyone actually ever said that outside of Twitter & woke student groups.

Then a gay man wades in with how passionate he is about TW being women and how he always accompanies his daughters into the Ladies, and it's fine Hmm, so why do we all bang on about toilets and potential predators?

Next comes another adult woman upset that we treat "all men as if they are rapists, and who are we (women) to say that TW are not women?". Then she thinks that the solution is to be less bothered about gender stereotypes - apparently without noticing that TRA ideology depends entirely on gender stereotypes,

By this stage, my eyes are rolling so far back in my head that I can hardly read on. One brave soul did post a mild reply concerned about self-ID in women's sport and, in fairness, there wasn't a pile-on but no support either.

It's so depressing that women - and the fathers of girls - are queueing up to give away their rights. My only consolation is that the original post only got a handful of likes, even though the OP has 100s of FB friends.

OP posts:

Hmm so should a lesbian tin not the men's toilets then? That is the logic some people are spouting.
Or how about men's changing facilities. Should bi and lesbian women to there.
Should all women feel free to use men's toilets because the queue is shorter?
Somehow I don't think the men would appreciate that, in fact I know they wouldnt.

VickyEadie · 21/10/2018 15:50

Ah, the old 'what about lesbians, then?!' trope.

hipsterfun · 21/10/2018 16:48

Aargh, I’m on a bingo loop. Always with the feelz, the circular definitions and the logical inconsistency.

Tellin · 21/10/2018 18:17

Ah great, someone who fails to grasp the difference between sex, sexuality and gender.

Charliethefeminist · 21/10/2018 18:24

Why would a lesbian not go in the women's toilets. Lesbians are women. I don't get it. Do TRA think lesbians are men. What's the deal there.

Ereshkigal · 21/10/2018 18:47

Agree, what’s the issue about intersectional feminism?

The issue is when "everything intersects with penis". The concept of intersectionality is badly understood by trans allies.

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 21/10/2018 19:16

I think I'm very lucky: I've only met one woke dude. He's 50, has two very young daughters and thinks that a teenage trans woman becoming a Labour women's officer was a sign of progress. His poor kids.

While my family is full of brexiters (we no longer talk about it) on self id we all agree it is fucking ridiculous. My aunt lives in France and doesn't keep up to date with UK news: when my mum told her about the consultation she said that if anyone else had told her she'd have thought they were joking. So far:
DM
DF
SIL
2 aunts
Lots of cousins
Have all filled in the consultation.

'D'B thinks it's ridiculous and will destroy women's sports, but being the obnoxious misogynist that he is said "well it's what you feminists wanted isn't it. You've only got yourself to blame" 🤬

Belindabauer · 21/10/2018 19:36

You ask why a lesbian might go into the men's toilets. Well why not? We have a gay man admitting going into the women 's toilets so why not the other way round? There is no difference. Or is there because he's a man!

OldCrone · 21/10/2018 19:49

I don't understand this argument. Did he explain it? How are feminists supposed to be to blame for men thinking they're women and wanting to invade women's spaces?

PawsomePugFancier · 21/10/2018 20:51

This is fascinating to me as I know quite a few people either transitioning or transitioning their children, yet when the parents of the "trans children," are posting the links, false stats, etc. it's like tumbleweed.

Nobody is joining in at all, one has 80+ likes for a picture of a dog, then 1 (her partner) for the stonewall link posted the same day last week. Can I take hope from that, that I don't live in a completely mad part of the country? Hope so!

EverardDigby · 21/10/2018 21:16

Pawsome same. I have someone whose kid is transitioning and I have long noticed very few FB likes. No one is critical, there's just nothing. I don't know why he carries on tbh as surely his child, also on FB must notice lack of support, which can't be great for them.

Mrsbadger77 · 21/10/2018 21:41

I commented on a friend's shared Stonewall post that was she not worried about self id given the Karen white story. I got told that it really was the same as denying rights to disabled or black people just because a few of them might break the law. Wtf. I didn't even bother arguing , I just said it's not the same and I didn't want to 'deny' rights to anyone! Just that the reforms were open to abuse. This friend is an extremely intelligent person too. I could weep.

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 21/10/2018 21:45

OldCrone It's an argument found sometimes under Daily Mail articles - feminists wanted equality and this is the result, ergo we've only got ourselves to blame. Yes, it makes no sense but a certain type of man (unfortunately I am related to one) thinks that we brought this on ourselves.
