Hi, coukd someone direct me to the info about stonewalls promotion of getting rid of the single sex exemption of the equality act? My MP didn't believe me because this isn't what they have been told.

Also, I remember seeing something about how widely stonewall are defining transgender - are there any references for that?

Sorry to or look it up myself, I'm in a rush and not well connected to all the sources yet

Thanks everyone

There's a list of evidence with links on this page, including the Stonewall link and others who gave evidence.

Should I be reassured?

No. I assume they just realised they are on the wrong side of history and are trying to rewrite said history.

If you scroll down this Woman's Place link at some point you'll see an image of an explanation of the 'trans gender umbrella', not sure if this is from Stonewall or not.

womansplaceuk.org/julian-norman-in-house-of-lords/

It's a really striking image tbh, what they include there under the umbrella and the boring cis gender people are outside in the dark and rain, and 'feminine women', 'masculine men' and 'cisgender ' in big rain drops that the special trans genders need to be protected from. They are encouraging the pathologising of a whole range of people who are just not conforming to sexist gender stereotypes as 'trans gender'. 'masculine women', 'feminine men' are trans gender?? Who gave them the power and the right to do that?? Is this what kids are being taught at school? If so no wonder so many kids are saying they are trans. It's so regressive. And a lot of those words seem to mean the same thing.

AugustL · 19/10/2018 14:30

If you're not a so called 'feminine ' woman, or so called 'masculine ' man, you belong under the transgender umbrella??

What do they mean by 'feminine woman' and 'masculine man' anyway? Sound like the Barbie to GI Joe scale.... where did that awful thing come from, hope that isn't taught in schools either.

James Kirkup collated evidence here:

R0wantrees · 19/10/2018 14:37

James Kirkup (Spectator) link above begins:
"Some facts about the events that preceded the Government statement here that the coming consultation on the Gender Recognition Act will be narrowly drawn and not affect the Equality Act’s single sex exemptions.

I offer these facts because some are claiming “there was never any question of removing/amending EA exceptions.” Those claims are either mistaken or dishonest.

August 2015
Stonewall submission to the Women & Equalities Select Committee says MPs should amend the EA to
“remove exemptions, such as access to single-sex spaces” (continues with further important evidence )

It was published back in the summer when consultation opened.

Their website now says they abs don't want to change single sex exemptions

Whose website?

Stonewall still wants the exemptions removed don’t they?

Pamspeople · 19/10/2018 14:56

Not according to their website
"We want to be absolutely clear – we are not proposing to amend the existing equality exceptions relating to single- and separate- sex services in the Equality Act. It will still be possible to exclude individuals with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment from single or separate sex services where doing so is a proportionate means of meeting a legitimate aim. The fact a trans person has legal gender recognition will form part of a service provider’s decision as to whether to provide a different, or even no service to a trans person, but having a GRC is not a complete answer.

Trans people with a GRC can still be excluded from single sex services, or provided with a different service if it is proportionate to do so on the facts of the individual case. Although reliance on this exception should be rare, it is most likely to be needed in particularly difficult and understandably sensitive areas, such as the provision of women’s domestic violence refuges. Whether it is proportionate to exclude a trans person would have to be judged by the service provider on a case by case basis, considering the trans person’s needs and the impact on other service users."
