Would she have become the Earl of Grantham?

What happens after the GRA consultation ends? Does it go to HOC and HOL?

I don't think she (he?) would inherit, no. Primogeniture isn't affected by a woman identifying as a man, is it?

(Shock I know!)

ZenNudist · 09/10/2018 08:24

I have just finished a dowton abbey binge (first time ive watched it) so i got this.

The point's the same if you dont get the cultural reference. Afaik the GRA wont change anything on the inheritance of titles, but on a related note, didn't the queen update the rules on primogeniture such that had prince George been born female hewould have become queen?

Rumbledore · 09/10/2018 08:24

Isn't that discrimination?!

Well yes of course it's discriminatory - it's a system primarily designed around the desires of men.

It would be interesting to watch some young lady/duke/whatever battle the point out in court. I doubt it'll ever happen though!

inquiquotiokixul · 09/10/2018 08:28

The law is very clear that primogentiure is unaffected by a woman identifying as a man. Everyone is obliged to accept the legal fiction that sex change is possible EXCEPT for the landed gentry.

'The thing to note here is that back in 2004, someone somewhere spotted a potential problem for a tiny group of men, and acted to pre-empt it.'

As far as I understand it, the monarchy only exists by the consent of 'the people', ie those who hold the real power. It stops them fighting over it and they can get on with life undisturbed. It matters not to them if the monarchy will pass to the first born daughter. It matters not to them how us plebs decide to mess about with our social order. Primogeniture and the handover of power is safe. Wink

The Tatler covered this:

The queen changed the rules for the monarchy, but they only apply for the monarchy.

The exemption that means trans men can't inherit under primogeniture was when I realised that the powers that be don't really believe TWAW either. That they know perfectly well that the entire situation is open to abuse. And yet they only chose to protect themselves.

Am I right in thinking that in Ireland where there is self-ID you can’t self-identify as a man and become a priest? That is only for men who were born men.
