Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

CIPD - article on transgender people in the workplace

IAmWhoYouSayIAm · 07/10/2018 18:56

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) have focused on transgender people in October’s edition of People Management (this goes to around 100k CIPD members home addresses)

I’m already annoyed and not even half way through...

These issues are being brought into sharp focus by a consultation over the Gender Recognition Act, which could open the way for individuals to ‘self-declare’ their gender, rather than requiring medical certification. This has led a small number of radical feminists to vocally protest that men would theoretically be able to access women-only spaces and services, which has increased anti-trans hostility in some areas but led, too, to a more open discussion about gender identity.

That’s it, there is no more mention of the reasons why it is being protested.

Stonewall and Butterflies reps have their say and focus on the people who are/have transitioned - how they feel in the workplace and their needs etc. Then how ultimately, it’s down to HR to ensure the employees’ wishes are met (lucky me) and communicated to ensure full inclusion by the company, staff, customers etc.

I want to respond to the editor. Help me?

I’m miffed that a 7 page spread hasn’t discussed the repuccusions of self ID other than a sentence recognising that “it’s in consultation”

"a small number of radical feminists". Talk about misleading.

IAmWhoYouSayIAm · 07/10/2018 19:10

I know. That’s when I got mad and my DH told me to calm down Grin

I got my paper copy of people management (CIPD magazine) through the post with this on the cover and I haven't been able to bring myself to open it yet... now I know I shouldn't have bothered... in the recycling bin it goes. I'm in HR too and am dreading the day when I get a trans case as I'll have to put my principles aside to toe the company line (or get disciplined I'd imagine)

catgirl1976 · 07/10/2018 19:28

I got mine on Friday and was fuming by the bias in that article, the fact this issue had the front cover and a 7 page spread (any CIPD member knows how to support employees with a protected characteristic, it doesn't need that much space) and the dismissal of the concerns of women as "a few radical feminists".

I am going to complain to the editor as soon as I summon the energy.

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 07/10/2018 19:54

I had an interesting trans case in a former role, transwoman sonographer wanted to be able to do mammograms.. we eventually agreed with her that if the patient wanted a natal woman she wouldn't insist but a) what if she had insisted and b) it was then up to the patient to refuse the treatment with this particular sonographer which many may have felt too uncomfortable to do .

HermioneWeasley · 07/10/2018 19:58

Oh FFS. Please complain

Pusheenicorn · 07/10/2018 19:59

Mine should be waiting for me on my desk on Monday morning.

Just what I need to get the rage before 9am the day back from holiday...

HermioneWeasley · 07/10/2018 20:01

Nothing in there about conflicts in protected characteristics, particularly sex and religion. The CIPD have an obligation to be balanced and accurate - they are a professional body, not a hobby horse.

Pusheenicorn · 07/10/2018 20:15

Also what a strange blood phrase "a small collection of radical feminists"

  1. What does it mean small? It makes it sound as though there's only like 5 people
  1. It's not only radical feminists who are opposed...

No?!

Twickerhun · 07/10/2018 20:22

Cipd - a masssive waste of my hard earned money again

My husband isn’t a radical feminist but he has this concearn...

whereisthatpenguinfrom · 07/10/2018 20:22

FFS.

I work with a TW. One day was 'Dave' and the next day they came in as 'Emily' (clearly not the RL names) and everyone has to pretend there is nothing to see here.. it pains me each and every time I have to use their new name or refer to them as 'she'. It goes against one of my own core values - honesty. I have no problem with them dressing in a wig and skirt. But they are NOT a she, not a vagina-possessing egg-producing mammal. My employer is forcing me to lie and I am pretty sure if I refused I would be out of a job.

7 pages for how many employees in the workforce in total?

whereisthatpenguinfrom · 07/10/2018 20:31

Does the above count as transphobic? I can't tell by the way, on the spectrum. I struggle with anything that seems dishonest.

That is awful. I can't believe they argued the point and didn't immediately back off on it. Actually I can of course.

Charliethefeminist · 07/10/2018 21:24

I think we should all get male email addresses to write our protest emails

Charliethefeminist · 07/10/2018 21:27

The case of the sonographer is dreadful.

I agree its sex discrimination to force you to express a sexist belief ie that there is such a thing as a female brain. We really should have a sort of freedom of thought/religious exemption.

MyPoorEyes · 07/10/2018 22:41

I was asking a friend her thoughts on self ID and she said she didn’t get what the difference would be. She currently works with a TW who hasn’t had surgery and uses the ladies loos.

She felt that this was fair enough as TW would feel very uncomfortable using the men’s, dressed in skirt etc.

I’m now confused re TW and transvestites.

Charliethefeminist · 07/10/2018 23:01

I wish these handm*ds would realise that we are not bloody human shields. Specifically my daughter is not a human shield for any man who wants to use a women's facility.

HermioneWeasley · 08/10/2018 19:35

What’s the email address to complain?

@MyPoorEyes we used to distinguish between transsexuals (men who had surgery and took hormones to try and remember,e women as closely as possible) and transvestites/cross dressers - men who had a fetish for dressing up in “women’s” clothes. Most of us had nothing but sympathy and support for transsexuals.

At some point, the whole thing got conflated under the transgender umbrella, and now there’s no differentiation between a man who has had full genital surgery, and a part time cross dresser who’s an intact heterosexual male . We are very concerned about the latter having access to women’s spaces.

IAmWhoYouSayIAm · 09/10/2018 05:02

@hermioneweasley I only can find a twitter address mobile.twitter.com/robertjeffery1?lang=en

Potentially, you could work out his email from this link or mail the senior content editor pminsight.cipd.co.uk/contact

I have a woke workplace that lets men who identify as women use female unadapted workplace loos and shower room with no consultation or even any acknowledgement to female staff that this is what is happening.
I find it grossly offensive to be forced to silently just accommodate this and to me it is humiliating and scary to have men in spaces in which I and others need to be vulnerable.
I DGAF if other women colleagues or HR or Male senior management in this workplace believe it’s all AOK. It fucking well isn’t. It fills me with complete horror to think how I would feel in a prison cell or female hospital ward being housed with AGP men. At least I have the option of scanning the job ads.
And I am too scared to speak up about this established situation for fear of being accused of bullying.
Goes without saying I use the preferred pronouns etc to be kind. But it is very upsetting to have to put up with this at work where you need to be there because you just need a wage and it feels like there is fuck all you can do about this untouchable, unmentionable instance of rampaging workplace sexism.
Does CIPD want to see even more female employees in this sort of situation? Hmm

TransposersArePosers · 09/10/2018 06:51

I mentioned Phillip/Pips the other day to someone and she asked me if he has reduced pay on the days he goes to work in a dress. I bet he doesn't!

Onlyaprawn · 09/10/2018 07:26

I read this article and got the rage too.

Turph · 09/10/2018 08:47

This is why I'm glad I'm in a union. I'd complain that the company is in breach of its health and safety requirements to provide adequate single sex toilet facilities. If you have a whistleblower email address use tenminutemail and inform them of this.

Hmm

“A small number of radical feminists”

I’d wager given how HR is a female dominated arena that’s there’s more than a few of their own members who can engage their brains and see what a shit show Self ID is about to bring to their workplaces.
