I always thought she was way too sensible to fall for nonsense.

Yay!

Green Party have been at conference this weekend haven’t they, wonder what has been going on.

LangCleg · 06/10/2018 18:27

Well, mounted police called on three women giving out FPFW leaflets, for starters.

Cwenthryth · 06/10/2018 18:33

Really? Any coverage/reports? Sounds quite scary :-(

This is what has riled Jenny

She had a stand at the Green Party Conference and someone defaced all her leaflets writing terf on them. Sorry can’t work out how to do a link. Search for @GreenRupertRead

OlennasWimple · 06/10/2018 18:34

Wait, what?! What happened Lang?

donquixotedelamancha · 06/10/2018 19:08

Bloody hell, she's really going for it. My impression (as an outsider) is that people have been pushed out of the greens for less.

I was most amused by this retweet: twitter.com/j_h_barclay/status/1047901426922508289

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 06/10/2018 19:52

I don’t blame her!

Needmoresleep · 06/10/2018 19:57

She is a very respected lady with a long history of green activism.

What a pity she faces this kind of abuse.

rightreckoner · 06/10/2018 20:06

That poem is awesome. Wendy Cope is totally GC 😀.

Also love the idiot on that thread who keeps saying “Terfs get in the bin” and the nice Green people are saying “do you mean recycling bin or another waste receptacle?”

Sounds awful I know but the more ordinary, thoughtful, decent people this happens to, the better. Then the public will see the extremism at work here.

Manderleyagain · 06/10/2018 20:07

Donquixo that poem is fantastic! It's the poem for our times.

MindTheMinotaur · 06/10/2018 20:17

I got all excited thinking Wendy Cope had come out as GC. I offer this from Billy Collins (and sincere support to Jenny Jones)

‘The planet goes on being round’ is my quote of the day :-)

PilarTernera · 06/10/2018 20:39

What has JJ said about trans people? I thought her main areas of interest were transport, police and housing.

Or was she just targeted for being a feminist woman with her own opinions?

Velella · 06/10/2018 20:44

Is Rupert Read using terfblocker as I can't see his tweets?

OP posts:
TwistedStitch · 06/10/2018 20:49

Good, it's about time the grown ups took back control of the GP which has become a private fiefdom for a particularly unpleasant group of TRAs. I imagine this abuse is retaliation for JJ blocking AC on twitter.

rightreckoner · 06/10/2018 20:54

My two favourite poets on one thread. Silver linings...

I know WC didn't write this about the self-ID issue but it's inconceivable she can write like that and not see this for what it is.

EverardDigby · 06/10/2018 20:59

Rupert Read got into trouble for gender critical posts some time ago

Freespeecher · 06/10/2018 21:55

Well done JJ! The free speech coalition is a wide one, and all the better for it.

JellySlice · 06/10/2018 22:03

Curious that the leaflet-defacer did it so daintily. Little scribbles in the corner, rather than scrawled right across the text. Almost like a laydeee might.

DoctorTwo · 06/10/2018 22:23

We need more women like Jenny. We all know that women don't have penises, we just need more people in positions of power to say it too.

theOtherPamAyres · 06/10/2018 22:30

I have pieced together the story from various tweeters.

Yesterday (Friday) There were two motions to the Conference to discuss the need for open and transparent debate on the GRA. The Conference Arrangements Committee rejected the motions on some technicalities. There was challenge to the decision. There was a debate on whether the motions ought to be heard nevertheless.

The unfortunate Jenny Jones was in the chair. Conference decided to proceed with the motions after a debate. There were some impassioned speeches about the Green Party's shameful treatment of gender critical members (thank you Chris Holt and Theo Simon)

The trans supporters weren't happy. Jenny Jones got a hard time.

Today, Saturday 06/10, saw the revenge of the TRAs: making a hoax call to the police about a serious public order/transphobic attack outside the venue (three women with leaflets) and defaced notices.

The motions still need to be debated. I doubt that they will go as far as saying that they will review their policies, merely that they will give people space, respect and support to have differing views.

More drama expected.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/10/2018 23:03

Thank you, theOtherPamAyres, for that extremely helpful summary.

Badgerthebodger · 06/10/2018 23:19

Seconded, I couldn’t quite work out what Jenny Jones had supposedly done but I see now that she has merely upheld the principle of free speech.

Seriously. If you had such a sold belief in something I would have thought you would welcome questions and debate. GC women are tirelessly campaigning just for the right to be heard, to actually have a debate, to have a voice.

The people who would see debate and questioning silenced are exactly the people who need to be questioned. If your policies don’t hold water after being questioned then they shouldn’t be policies at all. If you are happy to scream transphobia when people raise safeguarding concerns, you are absolutely the sort of organisation who ought to be questioned and investigated, as one of the foundations of effective safeguarding is to question, share and discuss, in order to make things better for the vulnerable people you are charged with protecting. If you’re advocating secrecy and shouting people down, those of us who understand why safeguarding exists are going to want to know why.

And remember. All women have ever done so far is ask questions and promote discussion.

theOtherPamAyres · 06/10/2018 23:44

155 voted to hear the motions
121 against

The number of people favouring #nodebate must be worrying.

The great shame was that the TRAs defaced JJ's leaflet appealing for help. She has a crowdfunder to raise money to employ a member of staff. (As the sole Green peer, with a heavy workload, she has no back up). She relies on volunteers.

I think the defacement sent a very clear message to the Green Party - that TRAs will sabotage and damage the party's efforts to become a credible political force, if they don't get what they want.

Just like they sabotage women's meetings.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/10/2018 02:34

I do hope the TRAs keep this up. They are snatching defeat from what looked like a shoo-in for the jaws of victory.
