Complaint to BBC regarding "people with periods"

Hello I am new here. This morning I sent the following complaint to the BBC:

Complaint about Lora Jones' menstrual cup story. This contains not a single mention of the word "women" or "girls" other than in the context of UK government policy, which I find disgraceful as though woman is now a dirty word. We are instead apparently now "people with periods." Millions of women and girls (specifically - not men or boys) around the world suffer stigma and lose out on valuable education because of menstruation. This article completely elides them. Do not erase women.

They have not responded to me but they have updated the article and removed this phrase. You will note though that they have still avoided including these words as far as possible. For example there is still a reference to "children" rather than girls, which I find very strange.

I was only saying this today that menstrual products are not marketed at Women any more.

My DH's head exploded

pennydrew · 04/10/2018 19:00

Can you link to the article?

pennydrew · 04/10/2018 19:09

Lunette Cups and some sort of Australian period pants company, both use women, girls and female in their marketing :)

Onecutefox · 04/10/2018 19:11

People with periods! Bloody hell! I can just imagine a man wrapping a panty liner with wings around his willy. A hod dog with wings Grin. Excuse me but I am actually is very sad that we as women have become nothing.

Well done for speaking out!

I've just read it and is it possible this has been edited? People seems to appear only once now.

Onecutefox · 04/10/2018 20:30

Imagine reading an updated anatomy book -
people with testicles
people with periods
people with vagina
people with penis ejaculating sperm
people with clitoris

greenlanes · 04/10/2018 20:39

again, please post link. thanks

noeffingidea · 04/10/2018 20:45

onecutefox you won't read 'people with testicles' or 'people with penis ejaculating sperm' , because no one is attempting to redefine 'male' or to deny male biology. Yet some people fail to see how sexist this is.

There ismention of women and girls, but still says

"Period poverty campaigners like Amika George and Freedom4Girls have claimed that children from low-income families have been unable to afford menstrual products, and have missed school as a result."

Onecutefox · 04/10/2018 21:20

poster noeffingidea , I've tried to imagine how it would look both ways but yes, they're targeting women only.

Onecutefox · 04/10/2018 21:22

Periods are a part of life for much of the population, but talking about them openly can be difficult for some people. I want to both laugh and cry.

DrCathki · 04/10/2018 21:26

Thanks fruitbrewhaha sorry am outraged yet stuck in hospital with only my useless phone so posting the link was beyond my limited capacity!

I imagine they're doing it because they don't want to offend transgender people (particularly transgender women, who identify as men but still have periods)?

Rather than trying to cut out women? There was a similar situation with pregnancy a while ago, I believe. Not wanting to say 'pregnant women' to avoid offending transgender people who become pregnant when identifying as something other than female.

Mxyzptlk · 04/10/2018 21:38

Yes, EnglishLady02. It's ridiculous.

OunceOfFlounce · 04/10/2018 21:46

Great message OP. Clear and strong argument about why we must be able to talk freely about periods.

Flowers for your hospital stay, wishing you the best.

OunceOfFlounce · 04/10/2018 21:47

Oh, just clocked your name and realised you might not be stuck in a hospital bed...just a hospital! Either way, Flowers

DrCathki · 04/10/2018 22:21

Thanks ounceofflounce I think they'd better take me off the drugs soon as I am not usually trying to campaign from my bed but I felt I had to speak up about this Smile
