The article is from Escapist Magazine and is entitled 'I'm a Transgender Woman because of Video Games'.

A story of God-fearing social isolation, teen self-loathing and the powerful influence of the internet.

interesting comments too.
I don't think it's just the God-fearing parents. Some people who were cyberpunks in the 80s and thought the internet was wildly exciting and trendy, who also saw boy nerds become billionaires by their 20s, hothoused their children in a similar way to sports stars hoping they would make early fortunes.
By encouraging them to play games, giving them high end computers (which also kept them safe at home) they may sometimes have created socially isolated young people highly adept at functioning online but barely able to relate to real life.
It's fascinating that the possibility to choose your gender expression is built into games. I wonder what effect growing up with that choice made on the developing psyches of kids who were only comfortable inside the net.

I remember a while ago someone on here pointing out the similarities between the way young people (males especially) approach transition and how they level up in video games.

Womanhood = achievement unlocked.
