Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

AIBU to suggest FWR keeps an eye out for Instagram discussion too?

I see Twitter discussion mentioned a lot on here, but the GRA consultation isn’t open for much longer and the usual suspects are pushing it hard on Instagram.

There are the same problems on IG as on Twitter, of TRAs spreading silencing bullying tactics on to yet another platform where women might want to speak.

For example Daisy Lowe (model, podcaster, former Strictly participant, 358K followers) was getting TRA-flamed on IG earlier today for having posted something supportive of women around the No to Self ID protest outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court this week. www.instagram.com/daisylowe

Having been accused of supporting transphobia, by the looks of it she’s deleted whatever she had posted and has now written an apology. I wonder if she’s a particular target because she produces a podcast ‘by women for women’? Hmm

Of the gender critical groups, I found FPFW and WPUK on IG www.instagram.com/fairplayforwomen
www.instagram.com/womansplaceuk

But not AFAICT: Standing up for women, We need to talk, Man Friday and not many of the key individual figures in the debate are on IG. Though Dr Rad Fem/Venice Allen is there www.instagram.com/drradfem

So, AIBU to suggest IG as a further place to hang out for gender critical Twitter users to spread the word further during these last few weeks of GRA consultation time?

Yay! Posie Parker and Jean Hatchet are on the thread on Daisy Lowe’s IG where Daisy had deleted a post because of trans activist pressure. ( Posie and Jean are getting a load of abuse rn of course.. Sad)

It has really come to something fucking scary when you can’t publicly use the dictionary definition of what a woman is without being abused.

I really hope Daisy’s podcast will cover this issue of how it feels when TRAs are out to silence you as a woman. And about the GRC consultation, what the case against Linda Bellos and Venice Allen is all about, (which was why those women were protesting at Westminster Magistrates’ this week) and about the no to self ID campaign and women’s right to free speech and to be lesbian without pressure from TRAs to include male-bodied people (who identify as female) in their dating pool. Not to mention the appropriation of the term ‘lesbian’.

To the anti-woman gobshites chucking FUCK TERFs about - As Posie says: your dicks are showing.

We see you.

Thank you for this - I am on IG quite a lot and am often appalled at the support for genderists on there. There are quite a lot of very big accounts run by young women which are loudly telling people they're bigots if they think you can't have a penis and be female. I am not 'out' as GC there but I hope others feel able to step up and speak up.

Good point. Instagram is where the under 30s are so definitely a place where it’s important to have a presence.

FeminismandWomensFights · 02/10/2018 23:20

Thank you both. I wasn’t sure if very many FWR posters are on IG because it isn’t mentioned that much on here, so I appreciate your posts.

Critter I’m thinking of setting up an IG account with a throwaway email address and all that so I can follow more stuff and let me be a bit more explicitly gender critical than I would be under my usual IG account.

As well as all that crap directed at Daisy Lowe- I didn’t see it but sounds like Maxine Peake also got a pasting for mentioning something to do with the women outside Westminster Magistrates.. Sad

I notice that Daisy Lowe has now deleted even the IG video post she had from the lesbian called Claire supporting all LGBT people because it had adult human female discussion on it and critique of Daisy for not knowing about previously posting about adult human female being wrong, Daisy’s apology- and then some gender critical women including Jean hatchet and Posie supporting Daisy. Then Daisy’s ‘some of my best friends are trans’ response and ‘my IG is about peace and love only’.

Jean replied that you can’t put off this discussion and Posie warning that there would be a pile on Daisy because in 2018 you aren’t allowed to say who can be a woman... it’s all in all a very depressing example of how silencing works on public figures. On IG just as effectively as on Twitter.

Now if you look at her IG its as if it never happened! Also deleted from her IG page for her podcast which had the same LBGT friendly video posted (no adult human female stuff at all) and which still had a pile on.

She’s also removed her ‘by women for women’ podcast mention from her standard IG bio so they are much less obviously linked. The Podcast’s bio no longer even links back to Daisy’s own official IG page. Just says ‘by daisy lowe’- could be any daisy lowe’

So this celebrity has been forced to delete posts, apologise publicly, add pro LGBT material, then delete that presumably because it contains the discussion of the thought crime and the apology and the continuing abuse from TRAs, remove links to her bio to her ‘by women for women’ podcast. Ie to generally remove her public, feminist positioning altogether. Sad

This woman has over 350,000 IG followers. This kind of silencing and the subsequent chilling effect really matters.

Personally, I wouldn’t waste my time with those that frequent IG. Mostly it’s just about being popular, in fact that’s all it is. Young fame-hungry people aren’t going to listen to this kind of deep thinking stuff, they’re just there for likes and free stuff from brands for their boring posts. Honestly I think it’s a waste of time.

So over on Twitter:

Alison moyet, singer, has left Twitter ie her team will now only be tweeting about her work. Another women silenced by TRAs. She’s got 130,000 followers. Sad
