Does anyone work in online media marketing?

Need help making feminist media get the widest online reach for the smallest amount of money, and ideas from those in the industry are most welcome.

Do you mean PR?

naivetyisthenewblack · 30/09/2018 13:02

Also, are you asking for help with distributing existing material (e.g. the Fair Play for Women videos perhaps) or for help with ideas for original content that will be easily sharable / publishable?

I'm not a PR person, but have worked in marketing and with PR people. Hopefully if I share what little I know, it will keep the thread bumped.

I do it for my job but there might be people who are more knowledgable

The creative is already produced.
This is about 'making it go viral' in an age where most viral videos are anything but organic, they are paid into position.
And in a climate where there is a reticence to share gender critical videos for reasons we all understand.

One thing you can do is build relationships with the media.

So, for example, I thought the video and report on domestic violence were two excellent pieces of work by Fair Play for Women. I was disappointed not to see them in the press.

I don't know Fair Play well enough to know if this happened, but from where I was standing, it looked like they led on the video, with the report as a supporting item.

Actually, the report should have been the news item, with the video as a supporting item. That's not because the video wasn't excellent, but because it's the report that was the original piece of work that tells us something new.

When we got a PR company in to a NFP I worked at years ago, the first thing they told us to do was to create the news, by polling our members on a current topic, so we could say x% of

For content that's already out, you need to identify who the influencers are who'll share your content to the people you want to reach?

e.g. do you have a list of GC people with big social media followings across all platforms?

Do you know who they are? Do some research, make a list.

Then, for those who you know are onside, contact them privately and ask for help sharing your content.

For new content, contact sympathetic national press contacts first, let them know you've got something coming up and ask if they're interested in covering it.

Get someone to write a really good press release. If at all possible, don't have someone amateur do it. Get someone with good writing skills and decent PR experience to write it. I've seen so many bad press releases sent out by various campaigns (in different fields) over the years, and it's such a shame as they just get ignored by journos. There's a format for press releases that needs to be followed. It's not hard, but if people don't know about it, they won't do it.

Contact the influencers ahead of time also and let them know to expect it.

The feminist movement - like most grass roots movements - is seriously in need of some good PR skills IMO.

There's so much good stuff going on, and we could really do with some help getting it out there. A genuinely grass roots, new women's movement is building. This is exciting stuff!

If any feminist MNers are in PR and want to make a difference, please make yourselves known!

@Milander what would you suggest?

Milander · 02/10/2018 21:47

Pay for it? A crowd funder to raise a bit? But £50 with a targeted audience would go far.

With the GC stuff it’s difficult. I like to see it - but wary of sharing it.

Paid for media on social can be very cheap like from £20 to reach hundreds.
It depends what following/channels you already have and leveraging them in the right way for your audience. Can you give more info?
